Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts didn’t perform particularly well when it hit Xbox One backward compatibility last year, running slower on Xbox One than it did on Xbox 360. Load it up today, though, and you should hopefully see that things have been improved.

“Been playing Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts?” developer Rare asked on Twitter. “It’s had a new performance update so jump back in via #RareReplay or backwards compatibility!”

Nuts & Bolts particularly seemed to struggle with the game’s hub world when running on Xbox One, occasionally dipping to as low as 19fps. Other areas managed to hit 30fps, but even then, the back compat version chugged in comparison to the Xbox 360 original.

I haven’t been able to test out exactly how much the new update tweaks performance, but I’m hoping it means the game manages to sustain its 30fps target far more regularly than it did before.

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts launched on Xbox 360 way back in 2008, and mixed up the series’ traditional 3D platforming with a vehicle creation mechanic. “It certainly won’t be for everyone,” Tom said back in his original review, “but with spectacular presentation, highly entertaining Robot Wars style multiplayer and a lot of good hearted humour, the bear and bird are back.” They haven’t starred in a new game since.

If you’re craving something like Banjo-Kazooie you should check out Playtonic’s Yooka-Laylee, a kind of spiritual successor to the old Rare games.
