Atari’s first-person Asteroids reboot ‘Asteroids: Outpost’ will not feature a single-player campaign at launch, developer Salty Games has confirmed.

Instead, the game will be a multiplayer-only title that tasks players with building and defending a space base against other players and incoming asteroids.

“I’ve read a few posts asking about single player and I want to confirm right now that we will NOT have a single player campaign during Early Access and are not planning on having a single player campaign for launch,” Salty Games ‘Salty Bill’ said on Steam. “That being said we are open to creating servers that are more geared for PVE as opposed PVP to cater to those who would rather live in peace.”

“PVE will consist of players surviving the harsh environment that is space,” added an Asteroids Outpost account in the post’s comments. “O2 deprivation as well as a constant barrage of Asteroids falling from the sky will be your primary environmental hazards. Even without other players looking to shoot you in the back staying alive isn’t easy.”

Atari revealed Asteroids: Outpost in February, describing the game as an “open world, sandbox style, survival experience” reboot of the 1970’s arcade classic.

“Asteroids is one of the most iconic titles in Atari’s portfolio of more than 200 games and franchises, and we’re looking forward to ushering the game into today’s digital gaming era,” Atari CEO Fred Chesnais said at the time.

The first screenshots were revealed earlier this month, offering a glimpse at what to expect from the outer-space shooter. The game is expected to land on Steam Early Access “very soon”.
