Atari has announced that first-person shooter The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena is now part of its 2009 publishing and distribution line-up. The title had previously been part of the Sierra Entertainment line-up, but was one of several casualties following the formation of Activision Blizzard.

The game was previously announced as a remake of The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, but Atari has now confirmed that players can also look forward to a brand-new full-length campaign. Additionally the game will feature online multiplayer modes, details on which will be announced at a later date.

“It’s very exciting to have Assault on Dark Athena as part of Atari’s 2009 publishing line-up,” said Phil Harrison, president of Infogrames Entertainment, the parent company of Atari. “The first game in the series was a landmark in action gaming and the outstanding team at Starbreeze are creating a feature-packed follow-up which will delight fans and new players alike.”

In development at Tigon Studios and Starbreeze Studios The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena sees players take on the role of Riddick, as played by Vin Diesel, and must use stealth and combat to overcome the crew of the predatory Merc-ship Dark Athena which awaits its prey in the dark reaches of space.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena is scheduled for release on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in spring 2009.
