The ASUS ROG Ally was announced on April Fool’s, and in the days since, handheld gaming PC enthusiasts have been scrambling to decipher if the handheld is even going to be real. If it is, it could very well be a Steam Deck-Killer.

According to ASUS, the handheld will feature support for Windows 11, while also harbouring a “custom APU” made in partnership with AMD. There’s already brewing rumours that the Ally could nearly double the computing power of the Steam Deck, which hail from the comparison of the ‘Little Phoenix’ APU said to inhabit the Ally.

The Ally was revealed only a few days after the ASUS ROG Flow Z13, a wearable RTX 4070 Ti laptop. However, this product seems a little more than a gimmick, as it’s entirely possible that this could be the device that takes Valve’s handheld off it’s perch.

The ‘Van Gogh’, which is the graphics card in the Steam Deck, uses Zen 2 and RDNA 2 architecture for its combined CPU/GPU processing unit. However, the AMD Phoenix 2, rumoured to be in the Ally, is said to feature RDNA 3 architecture alongside Zen 4.

With nearly 50% more expected power than the Steam Deck – this could definitely be the device that finally upends Valve’s handheld gaming PC. That is, if it’s real and not an elaborate April Fool’s joke.
