Assassin’s Creed Shadows is launching on the PS5 Pro with greatly enhanced ray tracing that “will exhibit an enhanced ray-traced global illumination technology,” Ubisoft has said.
While we won’t be seeing Shadows at Tokyo Game Show, at least PlayStation have gone ahead to reassure prospective players of the graphical fidelity. In a recent blog showcasing developers experiences with the PS5 Pro, Ubisoft technology director Pierre Fortin shared that the studio has been “working diligently to maximise the experience on PS5 Pro”
The most notable comment is that through “the increased ray-tracing capabilities of (sic) PS5 Pro,” the game is going to be seeing much enhanced performance and fidelity than its base model PS5 counterpart.
At Gamescom this year, I watched Ubisoft’s presentation of Shadows and it looked utterly phenomenal. It appeared to be played on a console, though it was tucked away in a box. With fidelity ray tracing on display, and the silky smooth framerate holding very steady, it is very possible this was being showcased on a PS5 Pro. I have no evidence for that, just a hunch, mind. In retrospect, it’s also quite unlikely that Ubisoft would present a very work-in-progress build of the game. Who knows?
Furthermore, “thanks to PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) and combined with the more powerful GPU, players will see improved rendering systems and an increase in the photorealism and immersion of the game. As players explore Feudal Japan, they can expect improved environments, ambiance and atmosphere as well as more details, up close and at a distance.”
PSSR is not PlayStation’s attempt at a Soviet Union, but their AI upscaling tech deployed in the Pro’s new graphics card. Effectively, it’s a variant of FSR and DLSS, netting you a higher resolution without tanking your frame rate.
“With the PS5 Pro, players will be able to experience a visually stunning game that fully immerses them in 16th century Japan,” Fortin said.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is one of a few PS5 Pro enhanced games and will be releasing later this November.
