Formerly known as Brian Lara International Cricket, Codemasters’ popular cricket video game series will return later this summer as Ashes Cricket 2009, reports GameSpot.

In development at Melbourne-based Transmission Games (Brian Lara PSP, Heroes Over the Pacific), Ashes 2009 will feature official licences for both the English and Australian international teams and the rights to the Ashes name.

Players can expect a total of 18 stadiums from 12 countries, including all of the grounds due to feature in this year’s Test series.

English Cricket Board commercial director John Perera commented: “The Ashes is one of the iconic challenges in world sport. With cricket set to dominate the sporting calendar this summer, we’re delighted to be able to give cricket fans the chance to follow in the footsteps of their heroes and try and win back the Ashes for England.”

In addition to the Ashes Test series between England and Australia, players will be able to select other nations to take part in Test, One-day and Twenty20 matches. Matches will be playable both on and offline.

Newcomers will be able to learn the ropes of the game through a training mode presented by Sir Ian Botham and Shane Warne, while commentary will feature the voices of Botham, Warne, Jonathan Agnew, Ian Bishop and Tony Greig.

Ashes Cricket 2009 will launch alongside the start of the Ashes Test series in July.
