A huge number of classic retro games are landing on Xbox later this month thanks to the arrival of the Antstream Arcade cloud gaming service.

Billing itself as the ‘world’s largest collection of officially licensed retro games’ the service includes a whole host of classic titles such as Pac-Man, Puzzle Bobble, Metal Slug, Mortal Kombat and many more from a whole host of classic systems like the Amiga Commodore, Sega Mega Drive and even the Nintendo Game Boy and PlayStation 1. They’re playable through the cloud, so very little download is required, and even includes cloud saving, online leaderboards and the ability to resume play across multiple devices.

It’ll mark the first time the service has been available on console, being available on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles and new games are promised to be added every week. Even with the existing games, the service has a feature that allows the games to be modded to allow for custom challenges that can be taken on against players across the world.

A presentation to detail the announcement and some of the games available through the service will take place later this evening at 12pm PDT or 8pm BST. You can check that out below.

The Antstream Arcade service comes as it’s been revealed this week that, according to a study carried out by the Video Game History Foundation, only 13% of classic games are said to be “in release” or readily available to play. That means a whopping 87% of games are classed as “critically endangered.” While Antstream Arcade will set you back £/$/€29.99 annually or £/$/€ 79.99 for lifetime access, it seems like a good way to be able to play classic games on modern consoles.

Antstream Arcade will be available on Xbox from July 21, 2023 and is already available on PC, Mac and Android devices including Fire Stick and Samsung Television sets.
