Harmonix is hoping to bring back its much-loved rhythm-action title Amplitude through a Kickstarter campaign which aims to raise at least $775,000.

Originally released on PS2, the new game “focuses on the core Amplitude experience,” explains the campaign page.

“Single player and local multiplayer are included in the design, as are leaderboards for online bragging rights. The Beat Blaster (the ship), music notes, tracks and FX will all be modernized and gorgeous. The cyberworld around the tracks will be designed by artists and crafted by coders so that every pixel on screen can be driven by the underlying music. Even as we work through our plans for this Kickstarter, the game is beginning to take shape – an HD reinvisioning of the cult classic, smartly updated for today on every axis. We believe this is the game that fans of Amplitude have been asking for and a game that can only come from Harmonix.”

The game is currently planned for PS4 and PS3, but a future stretch goal will include PS Vita. Other platforms are likely to miss out, however.

“We think it’s important for a game built on the history of Amplitude and FreQuency to be focused on Sony hardware in order to remain faithful to the core gameplay experience,” explained Harmonix.

The game hopes to boast “an updated soundtrack, incredible visuals, and fine-tuned controls”.

The all-new soundtrack will focus on songs with an electronic-based feel, created in-house at Harmonix. However, the developer says it “will pursue licensed music for this release if we can secure enough funding”.

The funding currently stands at $137,197 with 17 days to go. An early backer promotion granted a cross-buy code for only $15, but you’ll now need to part with $20 for the same reward.
