THQ Nordic has announced that upcoming survival horror title Alone in the Dark is being delayed from its original October date into January of next year.

A message to fans posted to the game’s official Twitter account broke the news to fans, saying the following: “Horror games thrive on the eerie embrace of solitude, something that is impossible to achieve in a gaming month as busy as October. To ensure a breathtaking experience for everyone, we have made the decision to move the release of Alone in the Dark to January 16, 2024.” The game was originally scheduled to launch on October 25, just in time for Halloween, but it seems the deluge of games also releasing the same month have scared it off somewhat.

The new Alone in the Dark is set to be a reboot of the series, with an all-new telling of the events of the first game, but with some Hollywood casting in the game’s lead roles as it was revealed that Stranger Things’ David Harbour and Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer would be playing Edward Carnaby and Emily Hartwood, respectively. A demo for the game is already available, taking the form of a prologue in which you play as Grace, a young girl who’ll be at the heart of the survival horror title’s story.

It’s certainly one of the most creative ways we’ve seen to say “there’s too many games out that month” – but we can’t fault the sentiment. It’s already looking like a stacked month, with similarly horror tinged title Alan Wake 2 also releasing in the same month. It too moved its release date – understandable in a month that’ll also see the releases of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Super Mario Bros Wonder among plenty of others – though it only ended up moving one week to October 27; ironically putting it closer to the horror-tinged holiday.

Alone in the Dark will now release on January 16, 2024 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC.
