Microsoft has announced Age of Empires 2 HD Edition, a remastered version of Ensemble Studios’ classic RTS heading to Steam on April 9, 2013.

Developed by Hidden Path Entertainment, Age of Empires 2 HD Edition features an “enhanced visual engine”, which GameSpot reports allows for improved textures and ambient lighting effects over the original 1999 release. The game also includes native support for resolutions up to 1920 x 1080.

In addition, Age of Empires 2 HD Edition will include the entire single-player campaign from Age of Kings and its expansion The Conquerors, as well as Steamworks features, including achievements, leaderboards, online multiplayer matchmaking and cloud support.

Can’t wait? Early access will be offered to players who pre-purchase the game, GameStop states, letting them jump in from April 5.

Age of Empires 2 launched on PC in 1999 to strong critical acclaim, earning itself a 92 Metacritic rating.
