The acclaimed Persona 3, a standalone entry in the Shin Megami Tensei series, is to be released for PlayStation 2 across Europe on February 29.

Although the Shin Megami Tensei series has a strong following amongst hardcore gamers, Persona 3 hopes to attract a wider audience by requiring no previous knowledge of the series. The game is set in an entirely new fictitious city and has no connection to previous characters or scenarios.

Set in a Japanese school players get to experience high school life, enhancing their player’s ability through the choices made in the school day: studying in the library builds Academics, drinking coffee builds Charm and singing karaoke builds Courage.

While the day is spent building your character’s stats and abilities, at night the school is transformed into a monster-infested labyrinth. Players will need to summon their personas to fight and protect the player from demons. Over time players will grow to master their personas, even able to combine them to form more powerful creations.

Having been released to great acclaim in Japan and the US, European RPG fans should certainly have one eye on Persona 3 come the end of February.
