It was a busy night for The Last of Us fans last night, as the Summer Game Fest also brought an update on the standalone multiplayer game in the series.
Naughty Dog has confirmed the new “upcoming multiplayer experience” will indeed be part of TLOU universe, and also showed off the first piece of concept art. “We’re growing our studio significantly to ensure we build this full-scale, standalone game,” the team confirmed. “With its massive scope and immense world, in a way that fans have come to expect from The Last of Us and Naughty Dog.”
The team say they intend to make the title “inviting to new players while still a thrilling challenge for more of our seasoned fans”. Naughty Dog stopped short of offering a timeframe for when we can expect the new game, but did promise more news will come next year.
And the Last of Us news didn’t stop there. Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson (Joel and Ellie from the games) also showed up during the event to reveal they’ll be a part of HBO’s new live action series in “major roles”. While they didn’t reveal too much about exactly what these would entail, they did also bring along a new still from the in-production series of Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey’s Joel and Ellie.
All this on top of the original reveal of The Last of Us Part I – a remake of the first game – expected on September 2 for PlayStation 5 and at a later date on PC.
