The decision to make Red Faction: Guerrilla and its sequel, Red Faction: Armageddon, third-person action games has enabled the game to carve out a unique place in a market saturated with first-person shooters, Volition associate producer Roje Smith has said.

Speaking during a roundtable at last week’s massive THQ media event in New York, Smith responded to a question about the market being filled with too many first-person shooters.

“Yeah, I think it kind of over-saturates the market a little bit,” he explained. “So I think when you come over to a nice third-person shooter that has the feel of a first-person shooter you kind of make yourself a little bit more unique than the average shooter.”

Red Faction: Armageddon is scheduled for release in May.

The FPS genre might be over saturated, but secure a hit and you’re looking at huge sales figures. In recent years it has become increasingly difficult for the third-person action game to compete with the FPS, but with sales in excess of one million for Guerrilla, THQ will have been given hope it can build on that with the follow-up.
