Nintendo has announced it sold 113,000 3DS units across the UK over the launch weekend.
This is far from being a sales record for the industry (the PSP holds that with 185,000 units, but that number does cover a four-day period), but it does represent a new record for Nintendo. Its previous best was the Wii’s opening sales of 106,000 units. Across Europe 303,000 units were sold.
“Nintendo 3DS allows people to experience, for the first time, 3D technology on the move and at home, with fun and surprises for all to enjoy. With the built-in pick-up-and-play Face Raiders game and StreetPass feature adding new dimensions to the already diverse line-up of launch titles, Nintendo 3DS has struck a chord with gamers old and new,” said Laurent Fischer, Nintendo of Europe’s Managing Director of Marketing & PR.
Pre-orders for the 3DS were said to be in the range of 140,000, so the sales figure does fall some way short of expectations.
It’s interesting to note that UK sales account for over a third of all European sales.
