How to obtain Copper in Minecraft

Copper is a common mineral in Minecraft that can be obtained by smelting copper ores (or raw copper) in the furnace. By mining underground, you can find up to 200 copper ores per Minecraft chunk.

The perfect Y layer to mine copper ore is Y equal to 47 or 48. And you will need a stone or higher tier pickaxe to mine it. When mined with z Silk Touch pickaxe, it will drop a copper ore. And with non-Silk Touch enchantment, it will drop 2-5 raw coppers. Either which you can smelt in the Furnace to get 1 copper ingot.

Additionally, killing a Drowned can also give you 1 copper ingot with an 11% chance. This is increased by 2% with every Looting enchantment level.

#1 Craft Block of Copper

This is the most common recipe and usage for copper in Minecraft. With 9 copper ingots, you can craft a block of copper, which later can be transformed into 15 different variants.

You can use blocks of copper to craft cut copper. This block has a brick texture and can be used for building purposes.

For normal copper block and cut copper, they’re oxidized over time and will be transformed through 4 different states: normal, exposed, weathered, and oxidized.

You can apply honeycomb to a copper block to keep its state so you can sell them to other players or use them for your steampunk build later.

#2 Craft a Lightning Rod

You can use 3 copper ingots and put them on the crafting table to craft a Lightning Rod. This can be used to divert lightning strikes in Minecraft to protect your houses and stuff. Simply place it on top of the roof and it will attract any lightning strikes within a range of 128 blocks or 64 blocks in Java Edition and Bedrock Edition respectively.

Lightning Rod can also be used for decoration purposes, within industrial or steampunk themes.
