If you’re wondering how to use stealth in Trepang2 you’re probably not alone. The ultra-violent action shooter tends to put far more emphasis on gunfights and gore than stealth, but the mechanic is certainly there as an option, and it’s pretty well fleshed-out.

In this Trepang2 stealth guide, we’ll break down the core mechanics of the stealth system in-game, and how to use stealth effectively. It doesn’t always work out though, after all you’ll encounter more than one Trepang2 boss that needs to be beaten during your playthrough. So if you find yourself in a firefight you can’t avoid, make sure you already know how to customise weapons in Trepang2 to give yourself the edge in combat.

How stealth works in Trepang2

Here’s our advice for how to use stealth in Trepang2:

  • Crouch
  • Stay out of line-of-sight
  • Create shadows
  • Be careful of your environment
  • Use your cloak

Let’s break down each of these points in a bit more detail.

Crouch

Crouching is perhaps the most obvious one, but it’s important nonetheless. While crouching, enemies will have a far harder time finding you, both due to the reduced profile of Subject 106, and because you’ll make significantly less noise. Noise is a big factor for detection in these games, so make sure to stay low when you need to move quietly.

Stay out of line-of-sight

Another obvious one, but especially on higher difficulties, enemies can and will see you from staggering distances. If you’re able to outflank enemies or move from cover to cover, do so, as even a semi-direct approach is likely to catch someone’s attention. Also make note of soldiers’ movements, as many will often eventually rotate to knew positions, rewarding patience.

Create shadows

While in shadow, a small dot will appear in the centre of your reticle, indicating you are hidden. Enemies can still see you, but it’s much harder, and they have to be a lot closer. Shadows are crucial to successful stealth. However, you can also create them.

All light sources in levels are breakable. If you destroy them with a silenced weapon, such as a pistol with a suppressor on it, the sound will go unheard, and the new shadow will open up additional paths of navigation to get behind or outflank enemies.

Be careful of your environment

Environmental factors can have a big impact on your stealth. Noise is one we’ve covered already, as are shadows, but these can be disrupted in unexpected ways sometimes. Lots of items have collision detection, and knocking into things on the ground by accident can sometimes be enough to alert an enemy to your presence.

Your torch is another one. Though it’s useful for navigating dark areas, enemies can see the torch beam, even its light on surfaces when you might be around a corner. The same is true for laser sight attachments. Though they can improve accuracy, you’re better fitting just a suppressor on your pistol if you want to be as undetectable as possible.

Use your cloak

One of two abilities tied to the Q and E key, the cloak is easy to underestimate in the heat of combat. For stealth though, it’s one of the most vital unique tools at your disposal.

The cloaking field will make you invisible to enemies, and is even effective enough to break their targeting locks on you if used in the heat of a firefight. While they can still hear you, combined with crouching, the cloak makes you almost totally invisible to opponents. It has limited energy though, which will regenerate passively when it’s not in use.

Did you know?

Cloaking works on bosses too. Though you can’t exit combat while cloaked, invisibility will momentarily cause most bosses to lose track of you, allowing you time to reposition.

Due to its short use time, the cloak can’t get you through entire sections of a level on its own. But if you can’t quite reach a light you want to break, or need to move through an enemy’s line of sight from one area of cover to another, it’s perfect. If you badly want more energy for it, there is an infinite cloak available in the cheats menu. Take a peek at how to unlock all Trepang 2 cheats if you want to know how to unlock it.

Should you use stealth in Trepang2?

In our playthrough for our Trepang2 review, we found stealth to be a great tool in certain situations. Although many scenarios had unavoidable combat, starting from stealth was a serious advantage. Stealth tactics are a great way to pick off outliers and thin enemy numbers before an engagement. If this isn’t an option, stealth still gives you the advantage of initiative, allowing you to dictate the opening moment of an engagement.
