What is The Outlast Trials’ release date? The latest entry in this horror series has been a long time coming for fans who like to be scared. Red Barrels is developing and publishing the game, with your first chance to play it incoming. Here is everything you need to know about The Outlast Trials.

What is the release date of The Outlast Trials?

As of this writing, we do not have a date for when The Outlast Trials will fully release. That being said, the game will come out in early access for PC players through the Epic Games Store and Steam on May 18. Console players will have to wait until the full release to play it.

Originally, the game was supposed to release in 2021, but difficulties from the pandemic led to a 2022 delay before being delayed a second time into 2023.

Is The Outlast Trials cooperative?

Yes, The Outlast Trials is a cooperative multiplayer game, though it can also be played single player. Up to four people can work together to survive the trials, but there will be moments when they will be separated and have to play independently.

The Outlast Trials story

The Outlast Trials takes place as a prequel to the two previous games in the series. Set during the Cold War, you will play as a Reagent, a volunteer who was brought in to act as a test subject in various physical and mental tests run by the Murkoff company where the Reagents try to survive. They will be regularly chased down by monstrous enemies, who will kill them if caught. As expected with an Outlast game, plenty of gore and jumpscares will hit you.

The Outlast Trials gameplay

The below trailer is our first look at what gameplay in The Outlast Trials will be like, shown at Gamescom 2021. The game is played from a first-person perspective, with various monstrosities chasing you down in the trials. There is no way to fight back outside of throwing a brick at them to stun them momentarily, so you are very much the prey here.

The game has been described to be more like a television series, where it is longer and more drawn out than the previous games.

The Outlast Trials trailers

Besides the gameplay reveal and early access announcement trailers above, Red Barrels has done a good job of showing off updates for The Outlast Trials. Below is the first teaser that shows a group of Murkoff scientists drilling in the headset that all Reagents will be sporting in the game.
