Developer Red Barrels has revealed more info on multiplayer horror sequel The Outlast Trials.

Speaking on the PlayStation blog, co-founder Phillippe Morin spoke on the difference between the original two singleplayer games and the new instalment. “If the previous games could be compared to movies, The Outlast Trials is more like a TV Series. Your journey to freedom will be a long one.”

Those worried that multiplayer aspect might dilute the horror aspect should rest easy, however. Morin says that they’re using the same approach as the previous two games. This includes the key aspects “twisted realism, decadence, and in-your-face gore”. He adds “Whether they play alone or with friends, we want players to feel like they’re fighting for their lives and their right to freedom.”

In the game, you’ll have been abducted by the series’ shady Murkoff Corporation and find yourself undergoing a series of unethical experiments. Either alone or with friends, you’ll have to get through these trials and try and escape your captivity.

While the game was originally announced for a 2021 release, it has been pushed into 2022. It’s interesting this article is on the PlayStation Blog, as previously the game had only been confirmed for PC. The interview’s final question seems to confirm that it’ll launch on PlayStation 5 too, although the team are yet to investigate options to confirm DualSense features at this time. They’re excited by the possibilities though, and we should stay tuned for more. Righto.

The Outlast Trials is currently expected in 2022 on PlayStation 5 and PC. We can’t find solid evidence of an Xbox release yet, but if that changes we’ll let you know. You can check out the game’s latest trailer below.
