How many ships can you have in Starfield?

The maximum number of Starfield ships you can own at any one time is 10. Regardless of how your ships were obtained, you cannot own more than 10 ships at a time, and if you’re at the limit and are looking to get a new ship, your only option is to sell one of your previous 10 ships at a spaceport technician. Out of your 10 ships, you must also designate one in particular as your home ship. This will be the ship that your crew members are stationed on.

Despite the limit of 10, it appears that there is a loophole to obtain an eleventh ship in specific circumstances. If you have already maxed out your ship limit, and complete a quest that rewards you with a ship, you will be permitted to keep this ship, and any other quest reward ships you receive that go over the limit. However, this does mean that if you want to add a new non-quest related ship, you will need to sell two or more ships to get under the 10 ship limit again. Be aware that you cannot sell the Frontier, the ship you receive at the start of the game, likely because it belongs to Constellation rather than yourself.

Should I use multiple ships?

While not necessary, it can be useful to have multiple ships as each one can be customised to suit a different purpose. A small, more nimble ship with powerful weapons and a good shield will excel at space combat in a way that a much larger ship with many modules may not. However, this trade-off makes the smaller ship less useful when it comes to exploring and transporting cargo. Having a few ships that are tailored to specific uses means you can more effectively complete specific tasks.

How do you get more ships in Starfield?

You can obtain new ships by buying them from a Ship Services Technician at a spaceport, stealing them, or obtaining them from quest rewards. While the easiest way of getting a new ship is by buying one, stealing one is also a great option. Most of the ships you receive from quests are great options, and often have very high stats, but sometimes cannot be customised, which is a shame.
