Now that the vampire open-world shooter with us, we’ve got the lowdown on all of the Redfall characters, along with the specific slayer abilities and powers. The game lets you pick from one of four different characters, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. While you can play the game solo or co-op, one of the first choices you’ll make – which character you play – will no doubt form a lot of your experience with the game, so you want to make sure you pick the slayer that’s right for your playstyle.
Whether you prefer to hunt from a distance, or you like to support your fellow vampire killer – or prefer the stealthy approach, there’s a character that should suit you. Here, we’ll go through each of the Redfall characters in turn – and let you know their powers and abilities, to help you make this choice.
Jacob Boyer
Abilities:
- Raven
- Cloak
- Heartstopper
Jacob is the sniper of the group – who specialises in long range attacks. His skills are focused around reconnaissance – such as Raven, which will send out his animal companion to highlight enemies in the area and make them glow on you (and your squadmate’s) HUD so you won’t get surprised by a vamp hiding in the shadows.
Cloak meanwhile, allows Jacob to temporarily go invisible -allowing him to reposition and flank the enemy. Bear in mind that any attack will break the invisibility – so be sure you’re ready before you expose your position.
Finally, Heartstopper allows Jacob to summon a Sniper Rifle – essentially giving him an extra weapon from the three default that most of the characters can utilise. This sniper can lock onto enemies, and deal heavy damage for a limited time while it’s available – so it’s useful if you want to eliminate some key targets.
Layla Ellison
Abilities:
- Lift
- Umbrella
- Vampire Ex-Boyfriend
Layla’s abilities are centered around telekinesis and manoeuvrability, with her Lift power able to launch her – or any of her allies – into the air to let them get their drop on unsuspecting enemies, and the high ground if you want to attack from above.
Using her Umbrella meanwhile, means she can buy whoever’s being protected by it some much needed time to heal by deflecting all projectiles. Even better, pressing the ability button one more time when the brolly is out will explode it with a damaging psychic blast.
Finally, Vampire Ex-Boyfriend does what it says on the tin, literally summoning a vampire to attack your enemies. You can even upgrade this vampire’s skills – making them stronger and offering more versatility as they grow alongside Layla.
Devinder ‘Dev’ Crousley
Abilities
- Arc Javelin
- Translocate
- Blacklight
Vampire hunting influencer Dev’s powers are mostly centered around area of effect powers that attack multiple enemies at once – with his Arc Javelin able to spark a bunch of unwitting baddies up with lightning damage that will also briefly stun them, allowing you to get the drop on them.
His traversal ability – Translocate – sees Dev throwing down a device that can allow him to teleport a short distance. It’s quite handy in co-op too, as your teammates can also follow Dev to his destination through the Translocator – so pairing him up with a sniper – like Jacob – could be useful.
Finally, Blacklight works in a similar fashion to the Arc Javelin – only rather than bolts of electricity, it shoots out beams of UV light. As you can imagine, it’s particularly effective against vampiric enemies – turning them to stone for an easy follow-up to finish them off.
Remedios ‘Remi’ De La Rosa
Abilities
- C4 Charge
- Siren
- Mobilize
Remi falls somewhere between the engineer and healer of our gang of heroes – with her first ability a relatively simple C4 Charge that can stick to surfaces and do a ton of explosive damage to any and all who happen to be caught up in the blast.
However, a big reason to select Remi as your slayer is her robotic companion, Bribon. He’s a sort of robot-dog, who has the very handy ability Siren that will attract the attention of any enemies in the ability’s radius onto him and – most importantly – away from you.
If that wasn’t handy enough, Remi’s other ability is known as Mobilize – creating a rally point around wherever she throws it down that can heal both you and any allies in the circle – and even revive any friendly allies who might have been downed, making her a welcome addition to any squad.
Who is the best character to play as in Redfall?
Truthfully, no one playable character in Redfall is better than the others. Arkane Austin have deliberately made the game fully playable solo as well as co-op, so no one specific character is particularly stronger than the others – nor is any one character hampered if they’re not in a team. Not only that, but all weapons can be used by all characters, so there’s no particular advantage to picking one over the other to get a boost with certain weapons.
So our recommendation then, is to try each character and see which one suits your playstyle best. If you prefer to keep your distance and pick off foes from afar stealthily, then Jacob is a decent pick with his invisibility and long range rifle summoning. If you prefer to get stuck in, then Dev’s a pretty decent choice with his abilities that allow him to tackle multiple foes at once.
If you’re intending to play a lot of the game in co-op, Remi and Layla are pretty solid choices – the former with her healing Mobilize ability will make you a very popular companion in the heat of battle – while Layla’s shielding Umbrella and Lift abilities can be incredibly useful support to a team. Ultimately though, the decision is yours entirely.
