If you want to evolve Basculin, you need to have Basculin take 294 recoil damage in battle without fainting before leveling up. Remember that only Basculin with a white stripe can evolve. Doing this with a blue-striped one won’t have any effect.

Did you know?

Basculin can spawn with three different colors of stripes on its back. These colors are blue, red, and white. The white strip only appears in the Kitakami region in Scarlet and Violet.

Basculin can learn the following moves that cause recoil damage:

  • Wave Crash
  • Double-Edge
  • Take Down
  • Head Smash

Once it has taken enough damage from recoil, you can use EXP Candies, Rare Candy, or just continue battling to level up your Pokemon and have it evolve. Just make sure to keep tabs on how much damage your Basculin takes from recoil. If your Basculin levels up before taking enough damage, the counter will reset. When Basculin evolves, it will have red stripes down its back instead of white.

That is everything you need to know about the puzzle that is Basculin’s evolution. There are plenty of other Pokemon in Scarlet and Violet that don’t evolve through natural means. Check out the other Pokemon with a special evolution method in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.
