Azumarill isn’t the first Pokémon that comes to mind when you think of competitive Water/Fairy-types in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. You might think that it gets heavily outclassed by Pokémon such as Tapu Fini and Primarina, since Azumarill doesn’t boast the best attributes. However, with the right build, Azumarill can be a standout Pokémon for both Tera Raids and competitive battles.

As with all Pokémon, having the right moveset is integral in keeping Azumarill meta-competitive. That’s exactly what this guide is going to help you out with. So sit back and relax while we make your life a whole lot easier by giving you the best moveset for Azumarill in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

What are Azumarill’s Sttrengths in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet?

On paper, Azumarill’s best stat is its HP, which falls at a decent 100. Its worst attribute is its Attack, sitting at 50, which is only half of what its best stat is. However, that’s where the gimmicky nature of this cheeky Pokémon comes in. Azumarill is one of six Pokémon which can get the special ability Huge Power.

Huge Power doubles the attack stat of any Pokémon, immediately pushing Azumarill’s Attack to 100. But let’s not forget, Huge Power doesn’t affect the base Attack statistic. It doubles whatever your attack gets to after all the EV training, IV fishing, and Nature farming. What this means is you can significantly push Azumarill’s attack well past 100 to where it can become an extremely viable Physical Attacker.

Huge Power has an immense edge over Azumarill’s other ability, Thick Fat. Thick Fat reduces damage done by Ice and Fire-type attacks by 50%. But since Azumarill already resists these two types, keeping it on your Azumarill can be a bit of an overkill.

Best Moveset for Azumarill in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

Azumarill’s best moveset revolves around its Huge Power ability. That means hard-hitting Physical Attacks should do the trick in making it a power attacker in your party. There are only a few viable status moves you can utilize with the Water-Fairy. This means that your strategy with Azumarill should be to deliver as much damage as possible.

You can find its best moveset in the table below, alongside recommended Natures and items.

Double-EdgeNormal120100

Superpower aids Azumarill in standing up against its counters in Steel-types whilst providing a last-ditch nuke move. Being a high damage Physical move, it perfectly fits into Azumarill’s arsenal as an amazing coverage skill.

Double-Edge accomplishes a similar purpose to Superpower, as it can hit for neutral in most scenarios where Superpower will fail (don’t worry, your other moves should help you against those pesky Ghost types.) While some damage does get reflected back onto you, Leftovers or Berries should help replenish part of your health.

Liquidation is the first of Azumarill’s staple STAB moves, taking the edge over Aqua Jet as it delivers more consistent damage while also threatening the opponent with a Defense drop.

Play Rough comes in handy as it can one-shot the meta-dominant Dragon-types. Since Azumarill’s Attack doubles with Huge Power, and it also gets a 50% STAB on Fairy-type moves, you can be certain you’ll be able to one-shot those squishy glass cannon Dragons.

If you feel like taking a more explosive route, you could also substitute either Superpower or Double-Edge with Belly Drum. Of course, a hit-or-miss move like Belly Drum requires the right setup. However, you could certainly use it in a scenario where you’re going to get hit by a Grass-type move, which will immediately get absorbed by the unexpected Sap Sipper hidden ability.

Azumarill can be a surprising pick if your opponents aren’t prepared for it, especially since most of its strengths lie in its abilities. If you do plan on slotting Azumarill into any of your Battle parties, make sure you do it with the recommended movesets since that can make or break its role in battle.
