It may seem trivial to new players, but in the fast-paced and action-packed combat of the Monster Hunter series, your ability to consistently follow your enemies can make the difference between victory and defeat.

To do this, players can take advantage of the lock-on feature, but similar to other mechanics in Monster Hunter Rise, this comes with different options to personalize.

Here, we’ll discuss everything regarding locking on to your enemies and the various camera styles that make this easier in Monster Hunter Rise.

How To Lock On To Monsters In Monster Hunter Rise

In Monster Hunter Rise, you can lock onto large Monsters to make focusing on combat a lot easier. It is important to note that you cannot lock onto smaller Monsters at all.

  • To lock onto a Monster, press the right stick. This will toggle which Monster you have targeted, which you can see on the top right of your screen.
  • Move the right stick once you’ve targeted a monster to change which body part you attack.

There are 2 main styles through which you can control how your lock-on follows a Monster. These are Target Style and Focus style, discussed in full detail below.

Changing Camera Styles In Monster Hunter Rise

Your camera style is important in locking onto Monsters. You can choose either camera style by navigating through the camera settings option.

  • Open the game’s menu (+ button on Nintendo, Options button on PlayStation, Menu button on Xbox)
  • Head over to “Camera settings”
  • Scroll down to “Camera Style” to change between Target Camera and Focus Camera.

Target Camera

This camera style allows players to look in the direction their character is facing with the tap of a button (usually L on most platforms and controllers). Some of its pros and cons are listed below:

  • Controls feel more steady as the camera only moves when the button is pressed
  • More likely to lose track of the Monster as the player has to change camera direction manually
  • Not as beginner friendly as Focus Camera

Focus Camera

This camera style forces the camera to always target the monster you’re fighting, so you never lose track of it. The following are a few of its pros and cons:

  • Controls feel less steady as the camera constantly moves with the monster, making it potentially disorienting
  • Less likely to lose track of the Monster as the camera moves with it automatically
  • More beginner friendly than Target Camera

Final Thoughts

You can lock onto large Monsters in Monster Hunter Rise by pressing the right stick on your controller. To toggle how your camera follows the Monster once you’ve locked onto it, you can choose either the Target Camera or the Focus Camera. Each comes with its own pros and cons, so make sure to experiment before choosing the one that’s right for you.
