- To successfully intercept a pass, switch to the closest defender at the last second and hold Y on Xbox or Triangle on PlayStation to try and catch the ball
- If it’s interceptable, your defender will try to catch it. If it’s not, he will probably knock it down
Offense is vital in Madden 25, which is why it’s good to know how to intercept or recover fumbles on defense. Interceptions are back-breaking for opposing offenses and they’re a fantastic way to get the ball back quickly. They can change the game, and players who master the art of the interception are going to have more success in this game.
How to intercept the ball
To manually intercept the ball, you need to control the nearest defender. Whoever is in coverage should be your user. After that, if you are in position, hold Y or Triangle to try and make the catch. It’s better if you switch to the defender later because the switching puts you closest to the ball. If it’s a deep pass, you might switch to someone else and won’t be able to make a play.
When your opponent is passing the ball against you, you should be eyeing all turnover opportunities. Whenever your defender is close enough to make a play on the ball, they have a shot at catching it and running the other way. The likelihood ultimately depends on how good that player is, but anyone can intercept a pass.
Interceptions can happen automatically, too. You don’t have to control and attempt to do it every single time, but it does increase the likelihood of it actually working. Furthermore, if you execute the controls with perfect timing, there’s a boost in the chance that you’ll be able to make the catch.
Understanding interceptions in Madden 25
As mentioned, the CPU can manage interception for you, but you should try. Aside from the increased chances, you’ll be fully prepared to run the right way. If your defender is running towards the QB and the ball is intercepted, you’ll keep running that way when the field flips. If you’re not prepared, you can lose out on a big return.
Defenders usually don’t have high catch ratings like wide receivers do. They also aren’t usually in perfect positions, so interceptions are rare. Most defenses are lucky to force one in a game, so temper expectations on how often you can create the turnover. It’s worth noting that neither man nor zone coverage has a better chance to make an interception. It’s just about the play the offense runs and how well the defense holds up.
This applies to all game modes in Madden, though it’s worth noting that Superstar Mode players won’t have to worry about this unless they choose a defensive player for their NFL journey.
