Want to know if Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth has turn-based combat?

While earlier Yakuza titles have stuck to the beat-em-up format, Yakuza: Like a Dragon shook things up back in 2020 with its turn-based combat. So it’s no surprise that fans are wondering which system the next title is going to incorporate. Like a Dragon: The Man Who Erased His Name was a spinoff that dropped in 2023 with real-time combat, igniting discussion around the topic once more.

With the Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth release date nearly here, read on to learn about its combat.

Will Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth have turn-based combat

Yes, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth’s combat is turn-based. If you’re not a long-time fan of the series, you may not have known that the series was previously an action adventure beat-em-up in so far as to how combat worked. However, the first Like A Dragon title changed things up and welcomed a new era where you play as a party and fight using turn-based combat.

Studio Ryu Ga Gotoku confirmed that this turn-based system would be the norm for the Like A Dragon main series games going forward, although the former beat-em-up style play would still be around in spin-offs such as the Judgement sub-series and Like A Dragon Gaiden. However, Infinite Wealth is one of the mainline games in the series, and as such combat will be turn-based.

What improvements in combat does Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth have

Yakuza: Like a Dragon, the predecessor to Infinite Wealth, was a great game but its combat system had room for improvement. Fortunately, RGG Studio has tweaked its mechanics a great deal, ensuring that it feels more dynamic and free-flowing.

Infinite Wealth has more than what meets the eye

If the shark in the image has you scratching your head, these larger-than-life battles are thanks to protagonist Ichiban Kasuga’s vivid imagination. This is thanks to his Dragon Quest obsession (I’m not making this up).

Being able to move to a limited degree in your turn adds another layer of strategy into the mix, particularly when it comes to combos and bonus damage for back attacks. Environmental attacks are back on the menu too, especially since you can move towards objects before using them. Team attacks based on the bonds you’ve forged are a great way to reward invested players.

And if you’re fed up with beating low-level enemies, the ‘Smackdown’ option lets you auto-complete battles. While you don’t get the same experience this way, it’s a convenient option when you want to rack up money or items.

Can you turn off turn-based combat in Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth

While you cannot change the game’s combat as that would fundamentally alter Infinite Wealth, there’s a workaround. Protagonist Kiryu can ‘break’ Infinite Wealth’s turn-based combat, letting him bury his foes in a flurry of punches and kicks for a short duration. It’s an interesting mechanic in a game that traditionally asks both allies and foes to take turns.

That covers the turn-based combat in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. The game will be released on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 (PS5), Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
