Bohemia is littered with locks and doors begging to be opened, with the promise of plenty of loot and even quest progression behind them. To get them open, you’ll need to engage in a lockpicking mini-game that can be a tad obtuse the first few times before you get the hang of it. Or, even down right frustrating as you try to break through harder locks.

Given that lockpicks are hard to come by and fairly expensive to buy, you’ll want to get a handle on the mini-game as soon as possible. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to lockpick in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2.

Lockpicking explained

The lockpicking mini-game in Kingdom Come Deliverance consists of two phases. During the first, you’ll need to move the circle around the lock. It will grow and shrink as you move it and the goal is to find the spot where it’s at its largest and turns gold.

Once you’ve pinpointed the right location, you can then start the second phase where you’ll need to rotate the lock while moving the lockpick circle in the correct direction so that it stays gold. Keep rotating the lock and moving the lockpick circle until the lock opens.

If the lockpick isn’t in the right position for too long and you’re rotating the lock, there’s a chance it will break. If that happens, you’ll lose the lockpick and have to start the process again with a fresh one. To make matters worse, when a lockpick breaks it makes a lot of noise, warning anyone nearby that something fishy is afoot.

How to improve the lockpicking skill

To improve your lockpicking skills, you’ll want to get as much lockpicking and pickpocketing experience as possible to increase your Thievery skill. This will make the lockpicking mini-game more forgiving and easier to complete. You’ll also be able to take on harder locks (medium, hard, etc.). Once you hit higher levels, you’ll unlock perkpoints you can invest in Thievery skills like the following to improve lockpicking:

  • Silent Fiddler – You’re almost silent when using a lockpick, and if it happens to break, the sound will be 75% quieter.
  • Tool Master – Your lockpicks will be more durable and last 15% longer before breaking. If you still manage to break a lockpick, once you’ve successfully overcome the lock, a lockpick will be returned to your inventory.
  • Master Thief – You can unlock simple locks almost instantly, without the need for mini-game activation or committing a crime. Still, be careful because looting an unlocked chest like this is still a crime.

How to get more lockpicks in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2

The best way to get lockpicks in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is to look out for them when looting bodies, chests, and buildings. Alternatively, you can buy lockpicks from various merchants across Bohemia, mainly in settlements with fast travel points. For example, at the start of the game you can buy lockpicks from Merchant Jurg Thomel, the trader in Troskowitz, for 11.1 groschen a pop.
