Splitgate is a free-to-play multiplayer first-person shooter video game developed and published by 1047 Games. It was released in early access on May 24, 2019, for Linux and Microsoft Windows on Steam, and on Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 on July 27, 2021, upcoming PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S version is coming in 2022.
The game revolves around Halo-inspired sci-fi combat in battle arenas where players can create wormhole portals between two points on the map that have been compared to those of the Portal series, and fire weapons or travel through those portals.
Co-founders of the game are Ian Proulx and Nicholas Bagamian, they started working on the game as a school project while they were attending Stanford University computer science.
The game design philosophy was described to be similar to that of Fortnite and Rocket League, in which the game is easy to learn but difficult to master.
The game was released as a free-to-play title on Steam on May 24, 2019. 1047 Games continued to work on the game post-release, In June 2021, the company announced that the game would be coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S with cross-platform play supported.
While Splitgate struggled to maintain a viable player base after its initial early access launch in 2019, the game saw a significant surge of players when the game’s beta launched in early July 2021, causing it to surpass 600,000 downloads in the first week.
Sudden popularity was unexpected by the developers and led to the game going offline several times to fix server issues. Splitgate received an aggregate score of 68/100 on Metacritic

If you are looking to play with a friend on an earlier or later generation platform, you’ll need to add them via their Splitgate ID – a number that they can find via the Friends tab. Once your friend request has been sent and accepted, you’ll be able to play online together.

The short answer is yes, Splitgate is crossplay. That means that players on PC and consoles can play against one another, and the best part is the feature is automatically enabled by default.
Splitgate is currently available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, and all platforms can play with one another. Yes, that includes the PlayStation consoles, which have been a bit hit-and-miss with crossplay compatibility with other games in the past.
To use the crossplay feature, you’ll need to open the ‘Social’ tab by pressing the ‘View’ button on Xbox consoles or the touchpad on PlayStation. From here, you’ll see your Splitgate ID, which you’ll need to exchange with your friends.
Once you’ve all added one another, you can select your friend’s name from your Splitgate Friends list and invite them to your game, or join theirs. It’s as simple as that. To turn off crossplay, go to the Settings and then tab over to ‘Privacy.’ Here, you’ll need to uncheck the box for crossplay support. Doing this will disable the feature, so you’ll only be able to play with people on the same platform as you.
