Developer/publisher 1047 Games has announced it’ll be extending the beta of free-to-play shooter Splitgate and delaying its full release until August following a hugely popular beta.

The free-to-play arena FPS has been available in an early form on the PC for a couple of years and was due to launch as a full version on PC and consoles today. However, its recent crossplay beta earlier this month saw the game suddenly explode in popularity with two million downloads over the past two weeks. With only a team of four engineers on the studio’s 30-strong development team, they managed to increase the concurrent number of players from 400 to 75,000 in just a few days. Nevertheless, this did result in lots of people facing queuing and connection issues trying to get in just due to the sheer popularity.

However, in an announcement that was also broadcast on Twitch last night, the studio was happy to reveal its popularity has meant it’s been able to secure a $10m USD investment from venture capital firm Human Capital. This means they will be able to address server scaling as quickly as possible, and work on the game’s backend to allow more people in at launch. Of course, the knock-on effect of this is the game will now launch in August instead to allow the studio time to employ the server scaling fixes.

In the meantime, the studio has said it will resume the game’s open beta from later today—July 27—and will also update it to add much of the content intended for launch. This will include three new maps and new customisation options, and also allow players a longer opportunity to earn the beta-exclusive cosmetics in the game’s battle pass. Today’s beta update will also include some quality of life improvements, including mouse and keyboard support, an FOV slider for console and customisable controller layouts.

You can check out a couple of trailers for the game below. Splitgate will launch this August for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PC with the game also supporting cross-play.
