Charcoal is another variation of coal in Minecraft. Although it’s not being used as much as coal, obtaining charcoal is quite necessary if you’re playing on some modpacks such as Regrowth. In this article, we’ll show you how to make charcoal in Minecraft!
3 steps to make Charcoal in Minecraft
#1 Collect Log/Stripped Log/Wood/Stripped Wood of any type
Log in Minecraft has 4 variants which can be obtained in various ways, and below is the sum-up:
- Log: Can be obtained by chopping trees.
- Stripped Log: obtained by using an axe and right-clicking on a log.
- Wood: can be crafted by putting 4 logs in a 2×2 shape.
- Stripped Wood: same as stripped log but you need to use an axe on a wood block instead.
Remember that there are 7 wood types in Minecraft including oak, spruce, jungle, birch, acacia, dark oak, and mangrove. Combine with the 4 wood variants below, you can have up to 28 different items to make charcoal in Minecraft.
#2 Craft a Furnace
A furnace can be easily crafted by putting 8 cobblestones, Blackstone or deepslate cobbled on the Crafting Table following the shape above.
#3 Smelt the Log/Wood
When you have the furnace, the wood, and any fuel items, start making charcoal by right-clicking the furnace. Then put the wood in the top slot, and fuel items in the bottom slot. You can also use the remaining wood or log as fuel.
Another way to obtain charcoal in Minecraft is to break the campfire block without Silk Touch enchantment. Each campfire will drop 2 charcoal on broken.
How to make Charcoal in Bedrock Edition
On Bedrock or Education Edition, besides smelting the wood in the furnace, you can make charcoal using the Compound Creator with 7 Carbon, 4 Hydrogen, and 1 Oxygen. This will give you 1 charcoal as a result.
Frequently Asked Questions
What fuel makes charcoal in Minecraft?
Any fuel can make charcoal in Minecraft because the smelting result in general is only affected by the main item (top slot), not the fuel item (bottom slot). So you can use whatever you can to make the furnace work such as coal, wood, leaves, or lava and you can still make charcoal in Minecraft.
How do you get charcoal fast in Minecraft?
By setting up an automatic smelter machine or just by simply using multiple furnaces at once, you can get charcoal faster in Minecraft.
How do you cook without coal in Minecraft?
Charcoal can be used as a replacement for coal in most recipes. Except for blocks of coal and campfires. So you can cook with charcoal for sure!
