God of War Ragnarok – The Quest for Tyr Walkthrough

In this guide, you’ll find a walkthrough of the second major story mission in God of War Ragnarok – The Quest for Tyr. Sent to Svartalfheim, you’ll have to contend with snarky dwarves, wetlands, and inhospitable mines, all as you try to track down the Norse god of war himself, Tyr.

In the spirit of conserving the experience for all, we’re keeping spoilers and major story elements to a minimum, but for the purpose of explaining puzzle solutions and the like, there are a few in there. You’ve been warned.

We’ve also weaved in as many collectibles, favors, lore markers, rune reads, and more to help you tick off Svartalfheim 100% completion as you go.

Journey to Nidavellir

Walk forward from the portal and defeat the Wretches, then look to the top of the rock on the left to find one of Odin’s Ravens. This kicks off The Eyes of Odin Favours.

Push the boat to the water ahead. Row forward, picking up supplies from the water when prompted until the river opens up. Follow it left to a beach where there’s a chest to loot. 

Back to the boat and push ahead until you reach a large wheel blocking the path forward. To the right is a beach where you can disembark. Freeze the water and jump over the geyser. 

Go right to find a Nornir chest. Shoot the runes to unlock it. There’s one to the right of the chest, one behind, and one on the ledge above the chest.

To access it, back track across the gap and freeze the geyser on the right. Jump up and shoot the rune. While you’re up there, pick up the Hreidmar’s Brassard near the body – the first Things Left Behind artifact.

Return to the chest and loot it to pick an Idunn Apple, which increases Kratos’ maximum health.

Head up the wooden scaffold on the left then slide down the rope. Deal with the Grims. Climb on the right to reach the chest above.

Jump down and climb up the chain on the other side of the area. Loot the chest on the left, then pull the wheel downwards. 

Return to the boat and pass under the newly-opened gap in the wheel. Follow the path and pass under the bridge. Paddle to the left and grab the Yggdrasil’s Dew of Runic Power. Then dock at the beach. 

Fight of the grims. Shoot down the bucket and grab the loot, then burn down the bramble ahead to reveal a chest. On your right is a ledge with more bramble. Go through, right and onto the bridge where there’s another chest to loot.

Backtrack down to the bridge and look up as you reach land. Burn the bramble then climb up. There’s a chest and more loot up there. Shoot the bucket to the left of the chest, jump down, and grab the loot below.

Back on the water, you’ll find a lock just ahead. Dock at the beach just before it. Defeat the grims and wretches, then uncap the geyser on your left.

Jump up the path on the right, kill the grims, then turn towards the lock. Power up your axe, then throw it at the larger geyser on the right. This opens the lock gate.

Go through and follow the path until you see a glowing Legendary chest up above on your left. Follow the coast to find an opening. Dock at the beach and take on the Grims. The glowing chest is up above to the left.

Go right from the chest to find the Unsafe Roads rune marker.

Return to beach level and on the right is a locked Nornir chest. Note the symbols on the front. You’ll need to find and change the three spinners so they match the symbols.

The first spinner is to the right of the chest. Hit the spinner on the right twice. You can freeze the geyser to check the symbol. Follow the path round and the second spinner is on your left. Hit it twice to land on the symbol resembling a ‘B’. Lastly, hop up to the level above (where the chest is) for the third spinner. Hit it once so it lands on the ‘N’ symbol. Collect the Horns of Blood Mead from the chest to boost your maximum rage.

Return to the main path aboard the boat. Row to the next locked gate. Disembark on the beach to the right and back from the gate. Defeat the burrowing enemy by jumping to the platforms and throwing the axe from behind. 

Follow the path right. Throw the axe at the weak point and climb across. Pull the chain as far as it will go. Head left, freeze the geyser and jump across. Fight the grim then uncover the geyser. Freeze the geyser on your left, then call back your axe and immediately shoot the weak point above.

Backtrack and climb onto the massive weight, then shoot the geyser you uncapped, pushing the weight upwards. Loot the chest up there and pull on the chain to fully open the watergate. There’s also the first of Kvasir’s Poems up there – The Sunrise of Nothingness.

Return to the boat and press forward through the cave and into Nidavellir.

Explore Nidavellir

Head forward to the statue of Odin. Take out the Odin’s Raven perched on the roof of the house with the small water wheel towards the back left of the square. On the left is a ledge with a chest you can loot. There’s also the Shopping List Lore Scroll at the foot of the statue. 

Talk to Sindri. Shoot the sewer door, then the ore cart to the right and loot the chest. Dash back to the dock and instruct Atreus to shoot the magic gate, then loot the chest and pick up Kvasir’s Poem – Large Society Ground Orb, The Performance.

Head through the sewers. Turn, break through the barrels (there’s a burning flame behind them) and follow the tunnel. On the right, shoot the glowing disc and loot the chest. Grab the Griep’s Firebomb artifact as well.

Climb up the ledge and circle back right to where you came out of the sewers. On your right is an ore cart from Atreus to shoot. Continue forward, move the cart, and enter the house at the end to meet Raeb.

Boat to Durlin’s Office

Go through the door ahead, then cross the bridge on the left where you can crawl through a house to collect a nice stash of hacksilver. Continue to the shore and activate the portal.

Board the boat and paddle to the Bay of Bounty. Straight ahead is Yggdrasil’s Dew of Cooldown, which increases cooldown permanently by 2.

You’ll find another drop – Yggdrasil’s Dew of Defense, awarding 2 defense  – in the eastern most corner of the Bay. Lastly, if you take a left towards Durlin’s Office then a right following the right-hand coast, you’ll come across Yggdrasil’s Dew of Strength.

Go to the dock outside the office and disembark. Enter the building.

Exit Durlin’s Office to the Port – God of War Ragnarok

Exit the office and kill all the enemies in the port area, then head through the large wooden gate at the back.

Reach The Mine Beyond the Mountain

Board the train to the top of the mountain.

Reach The Front of the Broken Train

Dismount the train, and take out the Odin’s Raven circling need the smoky mound ahead of you. Continue forward and take the left ledge, then a sharp left to find the Bari’s Grenade artifact.

Squeeze through the gap near the ledges. Here you’ll take a Dreki. It’s a tough fight that forces you to learn parry timing. Play defensively and make use of the openings afforded by perfect parries.

Squeeze through the gap and take a right where you’ll find a chest, loot, and The Forge Rune Read. Continue down the mountain.

You can access the seemingly unreachable chest by jumping down the ledge on the left then swinging across. Reach the train.

Fix The Broken Train and Ride the Train to the Mines – God of War Ragnarok

Interact with the train, follow Atreus instructions to get it back on the tracks, then hop on. 

Search the Mines for Tyr

Once at the mines, get ready for a big fight. Once all the enemies are down, head forward and down the chain. Ahead is an Odin’s Raven circling above the water. Loot the chest and the Lofnheid’s Whetstone for the Things Left Behind artifact collection.

Head back up, climb the ledge straight ahead, and stick left, then shoot the red pots to clear a path. Go through the crawl space to reach the Jarsnmida Pitmines.

Freeze the channel above to lower the platform in front and grapple across.

Ahead is a Nornir chest. Light up the rune brazier on the left. Drop down left, loot the chest, and freeze the channel again then ignite the rune brazier. Grapple across the gap and light the third brazier. Before returning to the chest and picking up an Idunn Apple, grab the The Pit-Mine Rune Read on to the left.

Continue forward and help Atreus up. Signal to Atreus to turn the crank, then freeze the mechanism and leap across. Move the mechanism with your blades to redirect the water and continue forward. Turn around the freeze the water channel and jump onto the large rock. Recall your axe and jump forward. Open the gate, head right to loot a chest, otherwise continue straight ahead.

Chat briefly with Sindri to pick up a lightsource, then fend off the enemies. Go right, loot the chest, then interact with the Blades prompt to swing the massive crane around.

Return to where you opened the gate just a moment ago and climb up onto the freshly-moved rock above. Freeze the channel to move the crane back. Hop across once it’s come to standstill. Ahead you’ll find the Kvasir’s Poem – Tool and Bang and a Legendary chest. 

Use the rope to regroup with Atreus and head into the mine. Deeper inside, take the small cave on the left until a fight with a Bergsra Mother. Take the mine boat to reach The Applecore.

Exit the boat. Sindri’s set up shop there should need an upgrade or two. Move forward and instruct Atreus to shoot the green glowing buckle to uncover The Vault Rune Read. Get Atreus to shoot the blockage in the water channel, then freeze it with the axe.

Grapple across the gap and go through the door ahead. Instruct Atreus to shoot the green glow on the wall at the back.

Pass through. Defeat the enemies ahead and stick right to find the Cooperation Lore Marker. Go back and take the left-hand route. Loot the chest at the top of the winding path.

Continue forward and use your Blades to stop the flow of water and trigger the mechanism. Backtrack, shooting the red pot as you go, and head to where the explosion has cleared a path. Squeeze under the water channel and fight the enemies. Open the door at the back of the area and pick up Althjof’s Statue, part of the Things Left Behind artifact collection. 

Return to the mechanism and shoot the left side of the channel straight. Grapple across. Recall the axe. Turn around then interact with the Blades prompt on the channel. Jump back and shoot the right of the channel to lower the lift. Head up, recalling the axe once you’re inside the lift. Exit the lift and freeze the channel once again. Hop onto the roof of the lift, recall the axes, and jump across to the left to find a chest. Head through the door.

Continue until you have to fight a bunch of Wretches and look for a large crack in the cave wall with a dwarf encased inside. This grants you the Talisman of Meign. Go through the crack.

Get Atreus to shoot the large hanging basket, then grapple across. Stick right until you can grapple across a gap on your left.

Do so and jump down the ledge to pick up Durinn’s Stone Statue, the last and final artifact in the Things Left Behind collection.

Head through the door where there’s a Draugr Hole. Fight then loot the Legendary chest in the same room. 

Back track and swing across the gap, and take a left. Get Atreus to shoot the obstruction down below, then pull the rope taut with the chain on the right. Use the rope. Jump left and help Atreus up. Freeze the end of the water channel in front of you. Get him to move the crank, releasing ore into the water trough and triggering the mechanism. Backtrack to the central platform in the area and freeze the channel on the right. Cross the gap ahead. Recall the axe and get Atreus to shoot the ore. Leap across.

Look left when you land and shoot the Odin’s Raven. Before going through the door, shimmy along the ledge at the back, and open the gate for a shortcut back to the spiral area you were in previously.

Return to the door and head through. Loot the chest on your right, then crawl through the gap on the left. Tell Atreus to shoot the seals on the door, try to open it, fight off the Einherjar, and then head through.

Pursue Tyr – God of War Ragnarok

This next section is on-rails and is simply a case of fighting off the enemies and following the path forward.

Exit The Mines With Tyr

Continue forward to the lift. Head up and into Sverd Sands. Make your way forward to the ferry.

Escape Through The Mystic Gateway – God of War Ragnarok

Exit the ferry and run towards the mystic gateway to your right. Fight off the line guard that appears then enter the portal.
