In this guide, you’ll find a walkthrough of God of War Ragnarok’s third major story mission – Old Friends. Atreus heads to Midgard in search of answers and an old friend.
In the spirit of conserving the experience for all, we’re keeping spoilers and major story elements to a minimum, but for the purpose of explaining puzzle solutions and the like, there are a few in there. You’ve been warned.
We’ve also weaved in as many collectibles, favors, lore markers, rune reads, and more to help you tick off Midgard 100% completion as you go.

Enter The Mystic Gateway – God of War Ragnarok
Go through the portal to reach the Shores of Nine in Midgard.
Speak with Jormungandr
Follow Sindri down the snowy path, looting the chest as you go. Shoot the seals on the door and enter. Drop down and stick right, climbing several ledges. Shoot the red pot and loot the chest. Backtrack down the ledges and go right.
Shoot the bucket and chest, then collect the loot. Your path is blocked at this point – shoot the raised bridge on your left.
Climb back up to where the chest was and shoot the barricade blocking the way below. Go through and fight off the small mob of enemies. Take the lift up to summon Jormungandr, who makes a return to God of War Ragnarok.
Head Back to the Mystic Gateway – God of War Ragnarok
Interact with the door straight ahead.
Speak with Freya
Go through the door, loot the chest on the right, and enter the cave. Fight the enemies and loot the chest, which you can get to by shooting the red pot. Shoot the glowing seal and go through.
Push forward alone, climb up and across. There’s a barrel with a seal you can shoot on the way and aim for the red pot to take out the enemy on the platform ahead. Squeeze through the gap.
Loot the sealed barrels on the left as you enter. Follow the path and defeat the enemies. Shoot the seal, then the red pot through the opening. Wrap around on the right, shoot the other seal, then the red pot behind. The explosion opens a path on the left with a chest. Now, climb up to the top and fight off the enemies there. Continue up another climbing section. At the top, look immediately right for a sealed barrel. Ahead is the mission path, but first head left to find a chest.
Go inside and fight off two Nightmares. Once out the other side, grab the chest on your left then continue upwards to meet a group of nightmares. Head inside and down to where it opens out. Kill all the enemies and grab the various loot there – chests, a hanging bucket, and sealed barrels. When you’re done, go through the cave at the back of the area. Push forward, loot the chest ahead, and chat with Sindri. Head through the door on the left and follow the path to Freya.
Return Home to Sindri – God of War Ragnarok
Climb the chain and loot the chest on the left. Climb and shoot the seal in the cave. Jump down to Sindri. Fight then squeeze through into the cave. Make your way down, fighting off enemies as you go, to reach a lift and then the portal. This completes Old Friends.
