Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds came into the limelight in 2017, ushering in the battle royale craze. The game was clunky and poorly optimized, yet managed to pull in droves of players. The latest iteration of the formula is PUBG: Battlegrounds, which further improved on the formula. The goal is simple – you land on an island along with other players, loot the surroundings for weapons and supplies, and aim to be the last player or team standing. It’s the purest battle royale gameplay around and will immediately click with any Apex Legends players who try it out. Unlike its predecessor, PUBG: Battlegrounds is free to play on Steam.

Fortnite is the biggest success story in the battle royale genre. Released in 2017 by Epic Games, it grew and expanded over time into a gaming juggernaut. Today, it boasts several spinoff modes, constant crossovers and events, and much more. The game is famous for its battle passes and skins, with characters from many different franchises making regular appearances. The core gameplay will be very familiar to Apex players, so you’ll be able to slot in from the start. The game’s bright and colourful art style isn’t too dissimilar to Apex’s, and most importantly, you can play Fortnite for free.

Warframe

Warframe is a departure from the strict battle royale genre. It is an online multiplayer game that fits closer to the looter shooter type. The art style has stood the test of time for a game originally released in 2013, with constant updates and patches supporting it to this day. You’ll find plenty of familiar mechanics that you can transfer from Apex, such as the parkour movement, and similar combat styles. Warframe leans towards a grindy gameplay, not unlike aRPG games. The basic game loop will have you equip your suits, called Warframes, with gear and modifiers to take on challenging missions solo or with friends. And last but not least, Warframe is free on Steam, so you can check it out without risk.

Overwatch 2

  • Release Date: October 4, 2022
    • – 04 October 2022 (PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S, Nintendo Switch)
  • Platform(s): Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, Xbox Series X
  • Genre(s): Action, Shooter

Would you recommend this game?

Apex Legends shares many aspects with Overwatch 2. From a similar art style to hero-based gameplay that emphasizes unique ability use. Of course, one is a battle royale, while the other is a strict team-based shooter. That would make OW2 a departure from the genre, but you can translate many of your Apex skills into it. You’ll group up with your team of five to take on the various game modes across a plethora of maps. The game has both a competitive and casual side, so it’s up to you how much you’re ready to invest into getting good. Plus, OW2 is available for free on both console and PC through Steam and Battle.net launcher.

Destiny 2

  • Release Date: September 6, 2017
    • – 06 September 2017 (Xbox One, PlayStation 4)
    • – 24 October 2017 (PC)
    • – 31 December 2019 (Google Stadia)
  • Platform(s): Google Stadia, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Web, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X
  • Genre(s): Action, Adventure, First Person, Massively Multiplayer, Shooter

Would you recommend this game?

Coming from Bungie, Destiny 2 is a narrative-driven looter shooter game. While you can try it out for free, the game’s story expansions will cost you some money. Still, there is plenty of free content if you want to seek your teeth into it, especially if you’re only interested in the PVP side of things. That’s probably where most Apex players will feel at home, with many elements being similar to one another. The main difference is that Destiny 2’s PVP modes resemble an arena shooter rather than a battle royale. The PVE portion of the game shouldn’t be missed though, with engaging missions and constant loot progression akin to an aRPG.

The Finals

  • Release Date: December 7, 2023
    • – 07 December 2023 (PC, Xbox Series S/X, PlayStation 5)
  • Platform(s): PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series S/X, Xbox Series X
  • Genre(s): Action, First-Person Shooter, Shooter

The Finals is an FPS game from 2023 that provides fast-paced team gameplay and constant action. Set in a fictional futuristic game show, the game provides several intense game modes across several maps. Players can choose among one of three Builds – light, medium, and heavy – each with their set of weapons, gadgets, and abilities. While some of them will be familiar to Apex players, the most recognizable part will be the movement portion. Both games feature high speed, manoeuvrability, and parkour. Yet one of the best aspects of The Finals’ gameplay is the ability to demolish the environment, thus remodelling the battlefield to suit your team’s needs. Best of all, The Finals is also free to play on Steam.

Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0

  • Release Date: November 16, 2022
  • Platform(s): PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series S/X, Xbox Series X
  • Genre(s): Action, First-Person Shooter, Shooter

Warzone, coming from Activision, is Call of Duty’s answer to the battle royale genre. Version 2.0 was released in 2022 as a companion to Modern Warfare 2. The game is a classic battle royale in every sense – you parachute on a map, gather weapons and resources, and then fight other players or teams while the area shrinks. The goal is to be the last one standing. It brings the classic Call of Duty twist to the genre, with gunplay, weapons, and progression that’s familiar to fans of the franchise. Unlike the base game, Warzone is available to download and play for free.
