A relic from the era preceding the Great Frost, cores are one of the scarcest and most useful components you’ll need to survive the harsh cold. They are vital parts needed to unlock the most advanced technologies, including upgrading the generator’s capacity and setting advanced buildings and hubs.

Unfortunately, the technology is a bit too beyond the means of our plucky colony of survivors and can’t be manufactured or produced. We’ll walk you through how to get cores.

Where to find cores in Frostpunk 2

To get cores, you’ll need to explore the Frostland and find them at old colonies, settlements, factories, and automatons. To do this, make sure you have a Logistics District up and running so that you have Frostland Explorers, then tap the mountain button in the top-right of the screen. This will bring you to the Frostland map where you can launch expeditions to unexplored regions and gather up cores.

Select a region where the possible findings include cores (the little blue core symbol), then Launch Expedition. Wait for the expedition to complete. You can track this via the percentage on the mountain icon you clicked previously.

Return to the map and you’ll see several points of interest within the newly-explored region. If you click on them, you’ll get a breakdown of the settlement, including what resources are potentially available, including cores, by hovering over the action buttons. They often come with trade-offs. For example in the image below, taking in the wise women will give us 3 cores and 557 population but also worsen our standing with the Stalwarts. But, the cores are so vital that they are worth it in 99% of cases.

You can check how many cores you currently have at any time by checking the core symbol at the very top of the screen next to the Prefabs counter.

You’ll have to repeat this process as your need for cores increases. Keep exploring new regions so you always have the option to send out an expedition to retrieve cores. If you’re playing through the story, you’ll reach Winterhome in chapter 4 where you’ll find a huge stockpile of cores, but the old settlement is worse for wear and spewing toxic gas, which makes extractions complicated. Survive and you’ll have plenty of cores to see you into the future.
