You can check the work permit restrictions of your league by heading to the main page for your league. Under the Overview tab at the top, select the ‘Rules’ option in the drop down menu and scroll down until you see ‘Work permit rules’. This will list all of the rules you need to follow to get a work permit for your players.

Generally there are two criteria that should be fulfilled in order to get a work permit for a player. These are the number of caps for their national team, and the amount of money they’re being paid.

If your player is regularly playing for a decently ranked national team, they should have no problem getting a work permit. However, if they’re playing for a particularly bad team, the number of caps will likely not be taken into consideration. In these instances, they need to be earning enough money.

Alex’s Advice

Before buying a player, check their Scout Report where you’ll typically be told if a player will likely not qualify for a work permit. You can also change your scouting criteria to show only those likely to get a work permit.

If the contract you offer is a small one, the player won’t be counted as high enough to warrant a work permit being issued. This is the only way you can actually influence getting a player a work permit, simply by increasing the salary you offered to them. However, depending on the player, offering them more money may not be worth it, and it may be better to simply let the player go.

Sometimes a player will agree to join your club even without a work permit. In this instance, you can simply loan the player out to a country where they will get a work permit, and try and apply for another work permit the next season. This is an especially good idea for wonderkids who may not initially have the caps or salary to earn a work permit, but may develop into a player that qualifies.
