If you’re a bit perplexed by what Elden Ring Nightreign is all about, you’re not alone. The reveal trailer at the Game Awards late in 2024 suggested more Elden Ring, but as more details trickled in from developer FromSoftware it’s become clear that it’s a different beast entirely.
Among the most burning questions is whether Elden Ring Nightreign is a single player or multiplayer game. We’ll cut to the chase here: Elden Ring Nightreign is a standalone three-player co-op battle royale roguelike set in the Elden Ring Universe. Got all that? In this guide, we’ll walk you through all the details around Elden Ring Nightreign multiplayer and co-op.
Does Elden Ring Nightreign have co-op?
Yes, Elden Ring Nightreign is a co-op experience. Three players drop into an re-imagined alternative reality Limgrave known as Limveld to fight and loot as a shrinking circle closes in on them over the course of three days, culminating in a major final boss fight against the Night Lord. Though you can jump into Nightreign on solo, it’s very much designed for cooperative play.
Does Elden Ring Nightreign have multiplayer?
Yes, Elden Ring Nightreign is, by its co–op nature, a multiplayer game. However, it doesn’t feature any PvP multiplayer via mechanics like invasions like in the original Elden Ring or other FromSoft games. Instead, it’s based around PvE where three players fight against mobs and bosses. Beyond your squad mates, you won’t encounter any other players.
As for how multiplayer works, there are two options. Firstly, you can queue up to get randomly teamed up with other players. This is done via a pre-match hub in a re-worked version of the Roundtable Hold from the original Elden Ring. We don’t know yet whether there will be any sort of matchmaking to group up players based on meta-progress or some sort of hidden metric that determines skill level. The latter seems doubtful given the lack of PvP component.
The second option is to set up custom matches with friends using the FromSoft staple – and somewhat outdated – multiplayer password system. Set up a game, sling the password over to your buddies, and they can join you before choosing a class and jumping into a session.
