Pale Marks is a currency brand new to the Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred expansion that’s part of the equally new Bartering system. Pale Marks are used to purchase Legendary weapons and gear but also caches full of useful materials, Boss Summoning items, and even Aspects from Fayira’s shop in the Mercenary Den in Nahantu. This makes Pale Marks well worth accumulating whenever you get the chance, especially as you venture beyond the campaign and into post-game grinding.

Despite a solid breadth of tutorial pop-ups in the early hours of the expansion, there’s never a meaningful explanation of how to get Pale Marks. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to get Pale Marks and how to use them.

How to farm Pale Marks

To get Pale Marks, you need to unlock Rapport Ranks with each Mercenary. For every rank you unlock, you’ll receive rewards and from Rank 5 onward, these include Pale Marks, typically between 50 and 200 per rank. At Rapport Rank 5, you’ll unlock the Bartering system and Fayira as a vendor in the Den where you can spend the currency. Here’s a quick rundown of how many Pale Marks you’ll earn per rank playing on different difficulties:

RankDifficulty
Rank 1-40
Rank 550
Rank 650
Rank 750
Rank 875
Rank 975
Rank 10100
Rank 10 +200

Rapport is basically Mercenary XP. It’s earned by Mercenaries that accompany you while you’re out questing and fighting enemies, but only if they are part of your party as either a hired Mercenary or enlisted Reinforcement.

✓ Tip

Any Pale Marks you earn are tied to your Diablo 4 account rather than the character you’re playing. Start a new character or dip into an old save and you’ll have access to any stock of the currency you’ve built up so far.

Once you hit the Rapport cap with a Mercenary, you’ll keep earning Rapport and can repeatedly refill the Rank 10 XP bar to earn 200 Pale Marks each time you do so. This effectively allows you to farm as much of the currency as you need over and over again. However, you’ll want to hit Rank 10 with all the Mercenaries first to unlock the other rewards, especially the Bartering upgrades and caches.

How to use Pale Marks

To spend Pale Marks, interact with Fayira’s shop at the centre of The Den and then exchange them for caches and items. There are no other vendors in Sanctuary that accept the currency. As above, the shop only unlocks once you hit Rapport Rank 5 and get the first Bartering Upgrade reward with any of the four Mercenaries.

At first the stock features slim pickings, but hitting Rapport 5 and 8 with each Mercenary unlocks new item slots. The stock changes daily but if there’s nothing to get all that excited about, you can restock the supply for free once a day, then again for 50 Pale Marks as many times as you want.
