Cities Skylines 2 natural disasters list – how to deal with them

Here’s a list of all the natural disasters that you can expect in Cities Skylines 2: forest fires, hail storms, and tornadoes. We’ve also covered how to brace yourself in order to minimize the impact of these disasters.

Forest fires

Expect this disaster to strike if your city is near a heavily forested area. These disasters can quickly get out of control, blanketing your settlement in fog if you don’t take care of it. The Firefighting Helicopter Depot sends helis with firefighters to counter blazes before they take down the forest.

While your firefighting department can assist with this as well, they can only do so if the forest is near a road. They cannot wade into forested areas to deal with forest fires. This makes the Firefighting Helicopter Depot vital in some maps. These are fairly simple to deal with if you have the right tools at your disposal. And try to ensure that these facilities receive adequate funding, especially during a forest fire. Expect this inferno phenomenon during warmer seasons and drier periods without rain.

Hail Storm

While hail storms are supposed to be more likely in warmer seasons, the developers may have set hail storms to occur in winter to balance out these natural disasters. These are far worse than the occasional thunderstorm that disrupts regular weather patterns. Hail storms send in chunks of ice across your city, damaging buildings and disrupting the flow of transportation. There’s not a lot you can do to resolve this. Expect repair costs after a hail storm and ensure that your facilities receive enough funding to tackle this operation.

Tornado

This one’s more lethal than the other two natural disasters in Cities Skylines 2. Buildings can take massive damage from a Tornado. Use an Early Disaster Warning System to prepare for these events. Emergency Shelters across your city will let you protect your civilians from the worst of the damage. And expect the repairs to cost you once this swirling vortex of dust and debris clears.

That covers all the natural disasters we know of in Cities Skylines 2. In an official blog post, they detailed how climate works in the game. Paradox Interactive stated that “Climates are based on latitude and longitude resulting in differences in the length of day and amount of sunlight as well as other elements such as temperature range, amount of cloud coverage, and precipitation.”

Will Cities Skylines 2 have other natural disasters?

We don’t know if other disasters like tsunamis and earthquakes will make it into the game. Some of these were available via mods and an official for Cities Skylines. The old Natural Disasters expansion included 5 pre-made scenarios to challenge disaster masters, with custom game objectives such as starting cities, win conditions, time limits, and losing conditions. DLC from Paradox Interactive for the sequel might offer even more scenarios to resolve against an uncertain climate.

While the Cities Skylines 2 achievements list does mention a rat infestation, I wouldn’t call it a natural disaster. Read up on the Cities Skylines 2 system requirements to see if your rig can handle the new game’s visuals and effects. Prepare your city right and you should be able to face natural disasters without a significant effect on your economy.
