The Black Myth Wukong release date window has finally been revealed by developer Game Science studios. The much-anticipated souls-like has impressed so far with its gorgeous visuals and fluid combat, and we now finally have a rough idea of when to expect its release.

Here, we’ll break down everything we know about the game so far, including its release date window, story, gameplay expectations, and more. We’ve still waiting to learn more about the RPG inspired Black Myth WuKong, but what’s currently available might be reason enough to start getting excited.

Black Myth Wukong’s release date window

Black Myth Wukong will be released some time in summer 2024. We don’t know a more exact date yet, but the game is under development by a small indie team, and has been an ongoing project for some time. Summer 2024 seems a probable candidate for release, but we likely won’t know for certain until some time late this year.

Black Myth Wukong release date window: Wukong dashes through a snow-laden mountain pass, giant enemies looming in the mist ahead of him.

The game’s release window was announced in a stop-motion short film made in celebration of Chinese New Year.

Black Myth Wukong platforms

Black Myth: Wukong will be releasing on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. There has been some speculation that it could release on PS4 and Xbox One as well, but this hasn’t been confirmed. Given that the game is being built using Unreal Engine 5, it also seems unlikely that previous-gen hardware will be able to adequately run it.

Black Myth Wukong trailers

We’ve had a few insights into the game over the course of its long development. There’s of course the most recent trailer that revealed the release window – a cute stop-motion short animation, made in celebration of The Year of The Rabbit, the current year on the Chinese calendar.

In addition to this though, we’ve had the fortune to see some in-game footage from gameplay features, including a 12-minute feature released back in 2021.

This one in particular caught peoples attention for the stunning graphical fidelity and the fast, refined pace of the combat. The positive reception apparently left Black Myth Wukong developers thrilled, and hopefully, we’ll see a similar degree of polish throughout the full game.

Black Myth Wukong story

While we don’t know a lot about the story of the game itself, we do know that it’s heavily based on Journey To The West, one of the famous Four Classic Novels of Chinese literature. The story follows the adventures of a hot-headed monkey king named Wukong and his friends, as well as the fights Wukong consistently picks against powerful and mythic opponents in their long search for enlightenment. While it’s unlikely that the game will directly follow all the story beats of the book, which is an astonishingly long work in its own right, there will likely be a lot of inspiration taken from it.

Black Myth Wukong gameplay

Similarly to the story, we don’t know much about the gameplay as of yet. From what we’ve seen, it’s clear that Black Myth is being developed for the souls-like genre of games, a genre borne from the success of From Software’s Dark Souls and Demon Souls games.

Combined with what we’ve seen in gameplay footage, it’s safe to assume we’ll see an action RPG with a strong focuse on combat skill and tactics. Every enemy will likely be punishing, and there will no doubt be a significant roster of boss enemies and boss fights throughout the experience.

We also know that the game will have some unique ideas and abilities in it, though. The main protagonist, referred to in-game as “The Destined One”, Sun Wukong, will be able to shapeshift. The player will be able to transform Wukong into a giant monster, as well as a flying insect. Expect a variety of encounters with an expansive roster of enemies in this game.

Black Myth Wukong Development

The title is being developed by a small Chinese indie games studio, Game Science, based in Shenzhen. The development team for the game has always been pretty small, hence the title’s relatively slow progress.

The game is being actively developed on the Unreal 5 engine, hence the stunning graphical fidelity we’ve seen during gameplay trailer footage. The studio are aiming for a launch on both console and PC, suggesting that ironing out any stability issues will be just as important as ensuring the game itself is polished.

That’s everything we know about the Black Myth Wukong release date window, story, gameplay and more so far. As we learn more about the game before it launches in 2024, we’ll be sure to keep you up to date.
