Want to know everything about Wyll in Baldur’s Gate 3? With a demonic source of power, the ‘Blade of Frontiers’ hero isn’t quite what the legends tell you. That fiend grants him much of his magic prowess.

He’s among the most powerful Baldur’s Gate 3 companions, especially with his Eldritch Blast cantrip. The Warlock class, while not as spell-heavy as the Wizard, can stand its own in direct combat unlike some of the other Baldur’s Gate 3 classes and subclasses.

Who is Wyll in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Wyll is a Human Warlock and potential companion in Baldur’s Gate 3 that you’ll find in the Druid Grove area. He’ll join your fight against the goblins at the entrance of the Druid Grove. You can then find him sparring with young Tieflings within the Tiefling camp. As you hunt for a cure for the Mind Flayer’s tadpole, you learn that he has one too. This means that the parasite quest gives you a common goal. Wyll will agree to join your party as long as you agree to help him slay some goblin leaders.

Bear in mind that one of these leaders is Minthara, a potential companion option. You won’t be able to team up with Wyll if you pick Minthara. With a smaller spell pool than the companion Gale, Wyll makes up for it with solid combat stats and offensive spells.

Wyll’s background and inspiration

Wyll calls himself a hero and appears to have many tales under his belt so it’s no surprise that he has the Folk Hero background. Align your choices with this background to gain Inspiration. This can be used to reroll important dice rolls in the game. Here are some of Wyll’s background goals:

  • Unmasking The Truth – Free one of the Hag’s masked thralls.
  • A Timely Rescue – Save Findal from the goblins who kidnapped him.
  • The Most Unfortunate Gnome – Rescue the gnome from his fate at the windmill.
  • Rescued From The Flames – Save whoever you can from Waukeen’s Rest.
  • Liberator – Liberate the enthralled fishermen from the mind flayer.

Wyll’s starting skills and attributes

Wyll’s skills and attributes are rather odd for a Warlock. He shows up with a Rapier, Leather Boots, and Padded Armour. His high Constitution score means that he can take a beating, especially if you opt to use the Mage Armour spell. And a solid Charisma stat means that this smooth talker is great at persuading or intimidating NPCs. Here are Wyll’s skills:

  • Arcana
  • History
  • Intimidation
  • Persuasion

And here are Wyll’s ability scores:

  • Strength: 9
  • Dexterity: 13
  • Constitution: 15
  • Intelligence: 14
  • Wisdom: 11
  • Charisma: 16

Best Wyll build

Wyll is a durable spellcaster thanks to his Fiendish Pact. This grants him The Dark One’s Blessing which gives him temporary hit points if he slays an enemy in combat. This increases based on your Charisma. As for damage, the Eldritch Blast will be your constant source of damage. But if someone gets close, sword attacks are an option too. Remember that you can pick the Archfey and Great Old One subclasses if you’d like to manipulate emotions and psychic energy respectively. This can be done with the help of Withers at camp.

At level 2 Wyll will be able to select two Eldritch Invocations. The following options are a great way to power up Eldritch Blast:

  • Agonizing Blast – adds your Charisma modifier to the damage roll
  • Repelling Blast – pushes enemies 4.5 meters away with Eldritch Blast

At level 3, Wyll can use the Pact of the Chain to summon a familiar. The Imp is your best bet, with a sting attack that deals poison damage. It also has wings, letting it fly. You can even turn it invisible to act as your spy in hostile territory. A companion you can summon without exhausting spell slots is an incredible boon.

When you get to learn a spell, I’d suggest learning Misty Step over an offensive one like Burning Hands. You can learn another spell at level 3 either way. This is because Misty Step lets Wyll teleport to any spot that he can see as a bonus action. Being able to instantly reach the high ground or an enemy is an amazing spell to have. This also makes retreats much easier.

Level 4 lets Wyll pick from one of the Baldur’s Gate 3 feats. But I’d suggest the +2 Charisma ability improvement instead. This ties well with The Dark One’s Blessing. You can also pick another cantrip and a spell. Scorching Ray is a particularly devastating option that goes well with Hex.

Hex lets you deal bonus damage to a target so try to activate it before firing off offensive spells. Remember that you need Concentration to do so. Attacks can break Concentration so be careful. You can let other party members take advantage of this utility too.

Level 5 grants Wyll two more Eldritch Invocations. One with Shadows or Armour of Shadows is a good defensive pick. He can also pick a powerful third level spell. Fireball is a good option. While he does have fewer spell slots than Gale, his familiar paired with his offensive options make Wyll a good choice for any adventuring party.

At level six, you’ll get another spell slot. Hunger of Hadar is a good pick as it creates a deadly sphere that deals Cold and Acid damage to enemies. Note that this requires concentration to maintain. And at level 7, you’ll get another Eldritch Invocation and another spell slot. We recommend Blight for the spell as it’s great against tanky foes. As for the former, the Book of Ancient Secrets gives you Ray of Sickness, Chromatic Orb, and Silence once per Long Rest without using up precious spell slots.

And once you reach level 8, consider using the Ability Improvement feat to build your Charisma even further. This will let you become a potent Warlock both on the battlefield and during conversations with NPCs.

Wyll companion quest guide

Players will need to speak to ask Wyll about the Goblins and the Tieflings. He then opens up about why he dislikes Goblins. He doesn’t talk about his glass eye when asked. Later on, players will need to choose not to bring him along to the goblin camp or the windmill in the Blighted Village. Head over to the windmill, speak with the goblin Spike and persuade him into handing over the prisoner and release him.

Head back to the campsite and add Wyll back into the party then head to the Goblin Camp. Look for Spike and speak about Mizora. Players will need to kill Spike and Abdirak when he says that Mizora is no longer there. Mizora is responsible for giving Wyll his Warlock powers. Wyll will then open up about Mizora. Go to bed after this conversation. Head back to the Goblin Camp, speak with the Druid Halsin in their prison and hunt down all of the Goblin leaders while Wyll is still in your party.

Wyll also wants to hunt Karlach. He believes that she is evil and has been tasked with slaying this devil. When you meet her at the Risen Road, you can choose to hear her out and convince Wyll that she is not a threat. This will sour things between Wyll and his patron. So remember that this action has consequences.
