Who is Lae’zel in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Lae’zel is a Githyanki Fighter who is a potential companion in Baldur’s Gate 3. You’ll spot her on the Nautiloid ship at the prologue of the game. But she’ll leave your party after you escape from the flying ship. You’ll find her on the Ravaged Beach, held prisoner by two Tieflings. Siding with her will lead to her joining your party. She’s a potent melee fighter, among the best in Faerun, and one of Baldur’s Gate 3 origin characters.

Lae’zel’s background and inspiration

Lae’zel comes from a Soldier background in the Forgotten Realms setting of D&D. Inspiration is gained by characters when they perform actions according to their background. This lets them reroll dice rolls at key narrative moments. It’s no surprise that Lae’zel’s background goals are combat-oriented. Here’s a detailed Baldur’s Gate 3 backgrounds guide with a list of goals for each background. And here are some background goals for Lae’zel in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Pentacrush – Kill 5 enemies in a single run
  • Stalwart Heart – Persuade Rolan to stay and protect the grove
  • Chain Of Command – Follow Flaming Fist orders at the burning inn
  • Conquer The Conquerors – Defeat the Githyanki raiding squad
  • Crow Crusher – Kill every leader in the goblin camp

Lae’zel’s starting skills and attributes

Lae’zel has an incredible Strength stat but isn’t great with Charisma. This means that, despite her rugged appearance, she’s terrible with Intimidation checks. Her Strength is only useful for Acrobatics and combat options. Here’s our Baldur’s Gate 3 abilities guide that breaks down what these mean. She starts with a Longsword, a Shortbow, a Githyank Half Plate armour, and Leather Boots. Here are Laezel’s skills:

  • Acrobatics
  • Arcana
  • Athletics
  • Survival
  • Intimidation

And here are Lae’zel’s ability scores in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Strength: 17
  • Dexterity: 13
  • Constitution: 14
  • Intelligence: 11
  • Wisdom: 12
  • Charisma: 8

Best Lae’zel build

Lae’zel is formidable in melee combat. She starts off with the Great Weapon Fighting style, letting her use two-handed weapons on her foes. As a Githyanki Fighter, she gets to pick from subclasses at level 3. Early Access only lets you pick between Battle Master and Eldritch Knight. I’d suggest the former unless you figure out a way to offset her low Intelligence score.

Once you pick the Battle Master subclass, your attacks are influenced by superiority die, which is specific to this subclass. Read up on Baldur’s Gate 3 classes and subclasses to learn more. Here are some of Lae’zel’s attacks:

  • Menacing Attack – chance to frighten enemies
  • Riposte – massive damage if an opponent misses you
  • Trip Attack – knock an opponent prone

At level 4, characters can pick Baldur’s Gate 3 feats. You can use this to increase your Strength score by 2 to 19. And at level 5, you gain an extra attack in battle. This lets Lae’zel attack twice in a single turn. Action Surge can make a big difference in combat. This companion might not be great at dialogue but she’s great in combat, be it soaking hits or dishing out damage up close.

Lae’zel companion quest guide

Lae’zel’s companion quest is titled The Githyanki Warrior. It starts after you rescue her from the Tieflings. The Githyanki knows how to cure the tadpole problem that’s bugging your entire party. She says that you need to find a Githyank creche. You’ll soon learn of a Githyanki patrol at The Risen Road. Fight them and you’ll learn of the location that holds the creche. This is all we know so far based on the game’s first act. Expect to learn more on the Baldur’s Gate 3 release date.

How to raise Lae’zel’s approval

Acts of cruelty, prioritising yourself over other NPCs, and violent endings to quests all raise Lae’zel’s approval in Baldur’s Gate 3. While the other Baldur’s Gate 3 companions aren’t a fan of her, Shadowheart is particularly against her. You’ll have to pick between them if you’re looking to build a high approval rating with either companion. Lae’zel doesn’t like it when you show compassion or delay in getting a cure for the tadpoles stuck in your brains.

Here’s how to raise Lae’zel’s approval in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Choose to attack Taman and Gimblelock in dialogue outside the Crypt.
  • Persuade the Tieflings to Let Lae’zel go and then attack them.
  • Show Guex in the Druid Grove your sword fighting technique (Athletics check).
  • When Asharak asks to say a word to the Tiefling Children, say “Bad News Children, You are all going to die”
  • Punching Aradin during his confrontation with Zevlor / using violence to end the confrontation.
  • Talk to the bird in the Druid Grove by using Speak with Animals and intimidate it. (Charisma check).
  • Convince Zorru, in the Druid Grove, to kneel.
  • After interrogating Zorru, compliment Lae’zel about this.
  • When Zevlor asks for help with the conflict with the Druids, say you’re sorry but you have no time to help him.
  • After the Snake incident, tell Kagha after “She was just protecting her own.” in dialogue afterwards.
  • After Arabella dies, tell Rath she deserved her faith because she stole the idol.
  • Swear to Nettie you will take the poison.
  • Mocking Elegis for being scared of goblins.
  • Crush the Tadpole outside of the Druid Grove.
  • Tell Edowin’s siblings to go fight the Owlbear.
  • Kill the Owlbear cub and its parent.
  • Deliver the final blow to Feezerk. Requires Wyll when meeting Feezerk.
  • When implored by Paladin Anders to hunt the Devil, say “I’ll Kill the Devil.”
  • After agreeing to help Karlach, Tell Anders Straight to his face you will help Karlach/Kill Him.
  • Tell Paladin Cyrel that “you’ll take the supplies” (Will Start Combat)
  • Let Her do the speaking when encountering the Githyanki Patrol.
  • Pass the deception check when speaking to the gith. (Enhance Lae’zel’s Charisma as the player would not be rolling for this deceit check.)
  • Speak to the artist and call him a slave.
  • Say you’re not getting involved when faced with Johl, Demir and Auntie Ethel.
  • When the player emulates the roar of a mind flayer while talking to Lorin.
  • Drink from the well in the Putrid Bog.
  • When Meeting Sentinel Olak in the Goblin Camp Entrance, Pass the Deceive/Nature option then say you “can’t be serious”, then fling poo at the guards. (Athletics check works inconsistently while “Can’t be serious” works every time)
  • Respond to Volo in the Goblin Camp with “Boo! Get off the stage!”
  • Take Shadowheart, Lae’zel and Astarion to the chicken chase area. Talk to Shadowheart’s area dialogue prompt and tell her not to be hasty.
  • Intimidate Novice Crusher to kiss your foot in the Goblin Camp.
  • Use intimidation the 2nd time to force Novice Crusher to kiss your foot.
  • Tell Novice Crusher “I’d Sooner spit in your face” and then double down saying “Do you want a demonstration?”
  • After telling Novice Crusher “I’d Sooner spit in your face” and then winning the fight, make him kiss your foot.
  • Telling tracker Grikka (goblin near the roasting dwarf) you can get answers from the prisoner.
  • Torture Liam for Torturer Spike without Wyll.
  • Sucessfully Tortures Liam For Wyll. Need Persuasion Check.
  • Wyll tortures Liam.
  • Talk to True Soul Gut with Wyll and Attack.
  • Fight the fake god Boooal in the Festering Cove.
  • (Loth-Sworn) Tell Pistle he is squandering his slave, Skickpit, on mundane tasks.
  • Tell Skickpit to take the lift to the surface after killing his masters.
  • During dialogue with Lae’zel, after she describes ceremorphosis, tell her you will find a cure.
  • Acknowledge how valuable the K’liir library is.
  • Decline Raphael’s invitation to remove your Tadpole.
  • During the 1st Tadpole Dream camp event, convince Lae’zel to stand down.
  • After the 2nd Tadpole dream, telling the group to stop using the Tadpole’s powers.
  • After defeating the Githyanki Patrol, win the persuasion check with Lae’zel by successfully calming her down.
  • Talking to Shadowheart either in camp or the field after finding her Shar Worship. Ask her about Shar. After passing the persuasion checks and going through multiple hoops of correct dialogue, Shadowheart will explain her religion. Then call her faith evil.

And here’s what you shouldn’t do as they lower Lae’zel’s approval in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Convince the Owlbear not to kill you in its cave.
  • In the crypt, agreeing with Shadowheart, questioning the need of possessions for the dead.
  • Convince Arka to spare Sazza by stepping in front of the crossbow.
  • Convince the Owlbear not to kill you in its cave.
  • At Camp, agreeing with Shadowheart that the first priority is to find a healer.
  • Tell Johl and Demir you will help them find Mayrina with your encounter with them.
  • Try to persuade the goblin guard outside the Goblin Camp.
  • Convince Nightwarden Minthara to spare Sazza.
  • Successfully Torture Liam but refuse to kill Spike.
  • Smear dung on your face when Sentinel Olak asks you to.
  • After telling Novice Crusher “I’d Sooner spit in your face” and then winning the fight, Help him up.
  • Telling the Goblin Child Eight in the Outdoor Goblin Camp, “I’m sorry for your loss”
  • Lae’zel has a rivalry attitude towards Shadowheart, heeding to Shadowheart’s advice will upset her.
  • After telling Crusher “I’d Sooner spit in your face” and then winning the fight, Help him up.
  • Buying the artist at Zhentarim hideout.
  • Sympathetic behaviours.
  • Disapproves if you succeed in the persuasion check to stop Kagha from imprisoning the child.
  • Find the evidence of Kagha working with Shadow Druids and expose her.
  • Bring Mayrina back home.
  • Make a deal with Auntie Ethel to remove the Tadpole from your brain.
  • Take Shadowheart, Lae’zel and Astarion to the chicken chase area. Talk to Shadowheart’s area dialogue prompt and agree with her to prioritise Halsin.

How to romance Lae’zel

Did you know?

Lae’zel is the quickest romanceable companion. If you know the best dialogue choices for her, you can romance her within 10 minutes of starting your Baldur’s Gate 3 run.

Lae’zel can be romanced after you rescue Druid Halsin and arrive at the refugee celebration event. Speak with her in camp and she’ll bring up romance directly if you have a high enough approval rating with her. While it can spook players, just accepting will progress the romance. Head to your bedroll and pick Lae’zel as your romance partner. You’ll head to an abandoned stone ruin before an “Under Construction” screen pops up. You’ll wake up pretty sore after that.

That covers everything about Lae’zel in Baldur’s Gate 3. Check out our Baldur’s Gate 3 Dank Crypt guide to clear the game’s first puzzle. And here’s how long Baldur’s Gate 3 is so you know what to expect when the game launches.
