Baldur’s Gate 3 Adamantine Forge explained

The Adamantine Forge in Baldur’s Gate 3 in the Underdark can be used to create powerful weapons and gear. Here’s a list of the equipment you can create at the BG3 forge:

How to start The Adamantine Forge quest in BG3?

Here’s how to get The Adamantine Forge quest in Baldur’s Gate 3:

• In the Underdark, head to the Beach waypoint that takes you to the Grymforge. Once you find the Rubble, you can talk to the Duergar and convince them to learn their motivations.
• Completing Protect the Myconic Circle in the Underdark lets you enter a secret area in Spaw’s circle. This is near the Myconid Colony waypoint in the Underdark. Cast Speak with Dead on the Dead Drow here to get this quest.
• Head near the Sussur tree and you’ll find a Dead Drow. Using Speak with Dead here will grant you The Adamantine Forge.
• Using Basilisk Oil to cure the petrified Drow near the fort entrance will also give you information regarding the quest.

How to reach the Adamantine Forge in Baldur’s Gate 3

Now that you have the quest, here’s how to reach the BG3 forge:

• In Grymforge, you’ll find a path blocked by Rubble.
• The Duergar Skarjall here will ask you to cane the beasts to clear this path. You can choose to use Speak with Animals here to convince the Rothe animals to turn on their masters.
• You can then request the Ox to clear the path.
• Walk through the right path until you find a tower with two levers and a floating platform to its left. Once you’re on the platform, shoot the second lever to reach another corridor.
• Note that this corridor is full of traps. Cross this corridor and find another platform. You’ll find two levers here too. Shoot the one on the far side to reach the broken bridge and enter the forge.
• Instead, you can jump or use Mistey Step from the other patch of Rubble where Nere is trapped. Clearing the rubble and fighting or teaming up with Nere is an option too. This can be done during the Free True Soul Nere quest. Using Misty Step or jump lets you sidestep the Rubble and reach the Underdark – Ancient Forge waypoint.
• Once you get through, the Adamantine Forge is straight ahead. 

Where to get Mithral Ore in Baldur’s Gate 3

You’ll need Mithral Ore to use the Adamantine Forge in BG3. Here’s where you can find BG3 Mithral Ore:

• You can find one to the west of the Adamantine Forge. A Mithral Vein on a wall will be protected by a few Magma Mephits. We recommend keeping your party apart to avoid AoE fire damage from these imps.
• There’s another Mithral Vein to the east of the Adamantine Forge. You can find it behind a lava waterfall near the Monk’s corpse. Magma Mephits will mess with you here but it’s nothing your heroes need to fear.

All BG3 Adamantine Forge Mould Locations in Grymforge

Here’s where you can find all the Adamantine Forge Moulds needed to craft exotic gear in BG3:

• Longsword Mould (Adamantine Longsword)- You’ll find this one early on. Use the hanging platforms to reach the north side of Grymforge’s centre. You’ll spot the Longsword Mould next to a skeleton.
• Mace Mould (Adamantine Mace) – It’s on a table near the Underdark – Ancient Forge waypoint. Don’t forget to grab the Mace Mould on the way to the Adamantine Forge.
• Scale Mail Mould (Adamantine Scale Mail) – You’ll find it on the ground southwest of the Underdark – Ancient Forge Waypoint. Some Animated Armour will be guarding it so sneak through or fight them. I’d advise pushing them off their platforms into the lava below. You can then safely collect the Scale Mail Mould.
• Scimitar Mould (Adamantine Scimitar) – Once you take the hanging platforms, you’ll find the Scimitar Mould on a skeleton near the tables that have the levers for the Ancient Forge.
• Shield Mould (Adamantine Shield) – The Shield Mould is on a skeleton on the northeast side of Grymforge. You’ll need to get past locked double-iron doors. Take the platform to these doors, pick the lock and head to the stairs at the back. You’ll find the skeleton and the Shield Mould.
• Splint Mould (Adamantine Splint Armour) – This Splint Mould can be found near a skeleton on the northeast side of the Underdark – Ancient Forge waypoint.

Now that you have all the tools, it’s time to create some solid gear and weapons.

How to use the Adamantine Forge in BG3

Here’s how to use the Adamantine Forge in Baldur’s Gate 3:

• Head to the centre of the Adamantine Forge. Expect surprise attacks from Magma Mephits before this.
• Interact with the Crucible and insert a Mithral Ore.
• Interact with the Mould Chamber and insert one of the six Moulds you have. Note that only the Mithral Ore will be consumed when creating an Adamantine item.
• If you change your mind, interact with the lever next to the Mould Chamber to add a new Mould instead.
• Pull the Lava Valve. Ensure that your characters are on one of the four raised circles before this. The first time you do this, you’ll summon a boss Construct named Grym.
• Pull the Forge Lever. This brings a giant column to smash the mould chamber. Doing this forges the Adamantine item and pushes you to a lower level.
• The button next to the Forge Lever takes you back to the high level.
• You can do this sequence twice as you can get two Mithral Ore for two Adamantine items. Just remember to swap the Mould or you’ll end up with two identical Adamantine items like me.

How to beat Grym boss in the Adamantine Forge

This boss fight might seem tough on the surface but it can be cleared with a neat trick. Here’s how to defeat the Grym boss in Baldur’s Gate 3:

• Don’t underestimate Grym. They have an absurd amount of health and are resistant or immune to most types of damage.
• Conveniently, they’re not resistant to Bludgeoning damage. Also, they can only be damaged in the Superheated condition.
• Attacking this construct with one of your characters makes them a prime target that Grym will walk towards. The best strategy involves keeping each of your party members in one of the four circles at the Adamantine Forge.
• Bring Grym to the centre and then pull the Forge Level. This brings down the column as a hammer to deal devastating damage to their body. Two hits should take them out.
• Watch out for their quake attacks and navigate your party members carefully. Magma Mephit enemies can also show up during this fight.

6. Adamantine Mace

Here are the stats of the Adamantine Mace in BG3:

• 1d6 +Modifier Bludgeoning Damage
• +1 to Attack and Damage Rolls
• Ignores Bludgeoning Resistance
• Automatic Critical Hits when attacking inanimate objects

The Adamantine Mace isn’t a great pick as most Act 1 weapons are straight-up better. And critical hits on inanimate objects only make sense in combat and that happens very rarely. Ignoring Bludgeoning Resistance is again a situational perk.

5. Adamantine Longsword

Here are the stats of the Adamantine Longsword in Baldur’s Gate 3:

• 1d8 (equipped in one hand) or 1d10 (equipped in two hands) +Modifier Slashing Damage.
• +1 to Attack and Damage Rolls with this weapon.
• Ignores Slashing Damage Resistance.
• Automatic Critical Hits when attacking inanimate objects.

The Adamantine Longsword is a better pick but it isn’t much better than the Adamantine Mace. Act 2 will quickly start dropping better weapons than this one.

Here are the stats of the Adamantine Scimitar in BG3:

• 1d8 (equipped in one hand) or 1d10 (equipped in two hands) +Modifier Slashing Damage.
• +1 to Attack and Damage Rolls with this weapon.
• Ignores Slashing Damage Resistance.
• Automatic Critical Hits when attacking inanimate objects.

While being able to use this with Dexterity-based characters like a Bard is good, you’re still better off picking another forged item. But if you really want a weapon, the Adamantine Scimitar is a good choice.

3. Adamantine Splint Armour

Here are the stats of the Adamantine Splint Armour in Baldur’s Gate 3:

• 18 Armour Class (Heavy Armour)
• Reduces all incoming damage by 2.
• Reeling (-1 to Attackers Rolls for three turns after they hit you)
• Attacks cannot Critically Hit wielder
• Disadvantage on Stealth Checks

The Adamantine Splint Armour is worth a whopping 3800 Gold. So if getting rich is your goal, get two of these. The Armour is a great choice but only a few classes have Heavy Armour proficiency. That’s why we’ve ranked this one lower than the Scale Mail despite its better stats.

2. Adamantine Scale Mail

Here are the stats of the Adamantine Scale Mail in BG3:

• 16 Armour class (Medium Armour)
• Reduce all incoming damage by 1
• Reeling (-1 to Attackers Rolls for two turns after they hit you)
• Attacks cannot Critically Hit wearer
• Disadvantage on Stealth Checks

The Adamantine Scale Armour also fetches you a good price at 1300 Gold. But since this one only needs Medium Armour proficiency, most classes can take advantage of this armour. Considering its generous armour class, it’s no surprise that you get a disadvantage on stealth checks while wearing it.

Here are the stats of the Adamantine Shield in Baldur’s Gate 3:

• +2 Armour Class
• Reeling (-1 to Attackers Rolls for two after when they miss)
• Attacks cannot Critically Hit the wielder
• Shield Bash—Knock an enemy Prone

The Adamantine Shield is our top pick because it doesn’t require Shield proficiency. This means frail classes like the Wizard and Sorcerer can also take advantage of it. Just don’t expect it to have a good price.
