Guirella Games’ Killzone series was once PlayStation’s Halo Killer, a key franchise for the brand alongside God of War and Uncharted. With the franchise dormant since the release of PS4 launch title Killzone: Shadow Fall, fans are still hoping for a remaster, remake or just a new game.
Speaking to VideoGamer for the PlayStation: The Concert Tour, which will showcase music from Horizon, Last of Us and more, Killzone composer Joris de Man expressed a desire for the series’ past entries to return in some form. However, there may not be any space for a new entry in the seires.
Should Killzone return?
In our interview, we asked the Horizon: Zero Dawn composer whether the beloved PlayStation trilogy should return for modern gamers. While the games are playable via PlayStation Plus streaming, you can’t play them natively with modern resolution, framerates and no input latency.
“I know that there have been petitions for it,” de Man said. “I think it’s ricky because, I can’t speak for Guirella or anything… I don’t know if it will ever happen. I hope it will because I think it is quite an iconic franchise, but also I think it kind of has to take into account kind of the sensitivities and the shift in, I guess, what people want because it is quite bleak in some ways.”
“I think it remastered one would be successful I don’t know if a new game would be as much.”
KILLZONE/HORIZON COMPOSER JORIS DE MAN
With the Killzone fanbase still hankering for a return to the series, the composer believes that a remaster collection of the original trilogy would do very well. Similar to the Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, players new and old would be able to natively enjoy the games on their PlayStation consoles (or PC) without the hassle of streaming, but a new game might not work anymore.
“I think it remastered one would be successful I don’t know if a new game would be as much,” the composer said. “I don’t know if people have moved on from it and want something. I don’t know sometimes I get the sense that people want something a bit more casual a bit more quick.”
Whatever happens, Killzone is an important part of PlayStation history. While a new game doesn’t appear to be on the table, at least the series lives on in Astro Bot.
