The teaser trailer for 3D Realms’ highly delayed, but equally anticipated Duke Nukem Forever came as quite a nice Christmas surprise. We got together and used VideoGamer.com’s hive mind to point out the most important parts of the one-minute trailer.

That’s not Unreal Engine 3

Duke Nukem Forever has been in development for a long time, and it’s moved from engine to engine over the years. We’d guess that the game is currently being built using a heavily modified version of the Unreal 2 engine, and not the currently popular Unreal Engine 3. Duke’s rather angular body is the biggest clue, with his model not being nearly as smooth as what we’ve seen in the likes of Gears of War and Unreal Tournament 3.

This enforcer would have Clint for breakfast

The enforcer is the first of three known enemies from the previous Duke Nukem titles to make an appearance in the trailer. They’re known for being able to jump to great heights thanks to their strong legs.

Brainiac alert

Octobrain.jpg

We picked this thanks to the three eyes – a sure giveaway that it is indeed an octobrain. It attacks by firing a blast of mental energy on its enemies, which weakens them. When it gets up close its razor sharp teeth will rip into anyone who stands in its way.

Can anyone smell bacon?

Pigcop.jpg

The Pig Cops are probably the most iconic from the series. You can see that this guy was once a policeman, but has been mutated into a bloodthirsty killer pig who goes crazy when he picks up the scent of humans. His ripped armour is the same as that of the massacred humans lying on the floor all around him.

Duke has always been about swearing and violence, and this teaser trailer makes it clear that things aren’t going to change in Duke Nukem Forever. The shot above features plenty of blood and a cop who’s been left mangled on the floor. The end of the trailer also features the line, “I’m looking for some alien toilet to park my bricks, who’s first?”. Not quite as good as the famous “I’m gonna rip off your head and sh*t down your neck!” but it’s the same old Duke.
