After lying dormant for over a decade, the much-loved and delightfully silly action-RPG series is back in the shape of Fable (technically Fable 4). This time around, Playground Games, the studio behind the Forza Horizon series, is on development duties with Xbox Game Studios putting its publishing might behind the project.
Officially announced back in July 2020, Fable 4 has been a long time coming with several delays along the way, but it finally looks like release isn’t too far off, news that’s sure to delight long-time series fans and newcomers alike. We’ll walk you through everything you need to know about Fable 4’s return to Albion.
Fable 4 expected release

As revealed during the January 2026 Xbox Developer Direct, Fable 4 is currently penciled in to release in Autumn 2026. After Playground Games initially slated it for release in 2025, the studio opted to delay it to 2026 to allow it “more time,” as noted by Craig Duncan, Xbox Game Studios. Duncan also stressed that he was “really excited with the progress” and that “it’s definitely worth the wait.”
We imagine Xbox will want to avoid launching anywhere close to GTA 6 in November 2026, so we see September or October 2026 as an educated guess, matching the traditional release window for big-ticket titles (as we saw with Starfield).
Fable 4 gameplay and story

Through short gameplay snippets in the official trailers and pre-alpha footage unveiled during the Xbox Game Studios podcast in February 2025, we know that Fable will offer a blend of open-world exploration, combat, choices and consequences, and a wealth of NPC interactions.
From what we’ve seen, combat will be a blend of melee combat using swords, bows, and hammers, and magic-based combat with fireball throwing. Enemies will include everything from werewolves, massive chickens, sentient trees, and toads to human foes and even giants. Fable will feature what Playground is calling style-weaving combat, merging melee, ranged, and magic (or strength, skill, and will) to create a system that’s fluid and frictionless, where the player can swap easily between styles.
The series’ morality system is back as well. though refined and expanded. Going by the idea that “morality isn’t a sliding scale”, reactions to your actions will depend on who witnesses them, earning you a reputation for repeated acts, but also different responses based on the location and NPCs. “There are a significant number of these reputations that you can get – you have a word cloud of reputations in every settlement, and they can be different from place to place. It means you can create completely different identities in all the different settlements by being a different person and behaving in different ways,” game director Ralph Fulton explains.
Playground’s depiction of Albion is set to be the largest yet, with what appears to be a sizable open world traversed on horseback as well as on foot. You will venture between city-based and countryside areas, completing quests along the way. We’ve spotted gorgeous, expansive meadows, caves, city scenes, and sun-pierced forests. Fable will feature a cast of over 1,000 NPCs with unique personalities, roles, and routines, weaving a complex network of persistent characters that the player will come to know and recognize.
As Fable game director Ralph Fulton explains, you’ll begin the game as a child who discovers their heroic powers before time-jumping to adulthood. The inhabitants of your village, along with your grandma, have been turned to stone, and it’s up to you to venture out to find those responsible, understand what happened, and reverse it.
Fable 4 trailers
Four Fable 4 trailers have been released to date. The official announcement trailer landed way back in July 2020. It’s all fairies, mellow forest glades, a posh English voice over, lush rolling hills, a touch of tongue-in-cheek humor, and Fable’s signature breezy fantasy setting: there’s no doubt what we’re dealing with here.
The second trailer landed at the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2023. Starring none other than a giant-sized Richard Ayoade in a mock interview, it offers a meatier look at Fable to the beat of choice words about heroes, chicken booting antics, and some colorful, very British slang.
The third trailer surfaced at the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2024, offering the longest glimpse of Fable 4 so far. In keeping with the tone of the two previous trailers, this one highlights a certain weathered adventurer by the name of Humphry, who is reluctantly forced to guide a gifted newcomer on the path of the hero.
The latest trailer dropped during the January 2026 Xbox Developer Direct, offering a tight 37 seconds of new gameplay. This includes new city and countryside shots of Albion, a brief glimpse of different skins you’ll be able to sport while exploring Fable, a few clips of combat, along with a look at traders, romancing, and, of course, some chicken booting.
Fable 4 platforms

As it stands, Fable 4 has been confirmed, to no one’s surprise, for PC (including Steam) and Xbox Series X|S. At the January 2026 Xbox Developer Direct, Playground also confirmed the game would launch on PS5 simultaneously. Fable will also be available on day one on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and Xbox Cloud Gaming.
As for a Nintendo Switch 2 version, there’s been no word so far. Xbox doesn’t have a history of bringing games to Nintendo’s console, and the graphical demands of Fable 4 may be beyond the capabilities of the hybrid machine. In other words, we’d be very surprised to see the game come to Nintendo Switch 2.
