Sony’s February 12 State of Play event gave us a shiny fourth trailer for Resident Evil Requiem, the upcoming new entry in Capcom’s survival horror franchise, and this one all but confirmed another returning character with close ties to returning protagonist Leon and Raccoon City.
While we only saw the back of her head, those short blonde locks almost certainly belong to Sherry Birkin, someone who survived the Raccoon City disaster, escaping alongside Leon and Claire Redfield in Resident Evil 2 (RE2).
Sherry is the daughter of William Birkin, the creator of the G-Virus and the man who spread the deadly T-Virus to Raccoon City during the events of RE2, infecting the town and turning its residents into zombies, and even stalking Sherry in his undead form. Players even got to control Sherry briefly in RE2 and its remake.
Back to Raccoon City
Sherry would return as an adult in Resident Evil 6, tracking down Albert Wesker’s son Jake and convincing him to donate his blood to create a vaccine for the C-Virus. The two would bond over their terrible fathers (who had been allies and plotted to betray the Umbrella corporation together) and would eventually help Leon and Chris take down Neo-Umbrella.
As mutual survivors of Raccoon City, Sherry also has a close bond with Leon, so it’s not surprising to see the pair working together in Resident Evil Requiem (RE9). The trailer also shows how Raccoon City survivors are mysteriously dying and that Leon also has a deadly and mysterious infection of his own.
This suggests that Sherry could also be at risk, and that Leon is not only trying to save his own life but also hers, and even potentially those of other Resident Evil characters like Jill, Chris, and Claire. Resident Evil Requiem looks to be a culmination of several Resident Evil stories in one game – and for the first time, we’re legitimately worried about their chances of survival.
Resident Evil Requiem will release on February 27, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, and PC.
