According to reliable insider NateTheHate, a current-gen upgrade for Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S is still targeting a 2026 release.

On X, NateTheHate responded to questions about whether the upgrade had been delayed to 2027. The insider said, “As far as I know, RDR2 is this year,” adding that this belief comes from the “same info as last year,” and that he hasn’t received “any update to suggest it won’t be this year”.

There were rumors in July 2022 that current-gen upgrades for Red Dead Redemption 2 had been canceled. However, in 2025, NateTheHate began reporting that an upgrade for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S does exist.

Some feared the insider may have accidentally confused Red Dead Redemption 2 with the remaster of Red Dead Redemption that released in December 2025 as part of PS Plus, but other sources clarified that this wasn’t a mistake and that an upgrade for RDR2 is “still coming”.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is from Rockstar Games, the studio planning to release GTA 6 this year on November 19. If an upgrade for RDR2 does come out this year, each passing month provides a smaller release window as Rockstar likely wouldn’t release it in the fall, close to GTA 6, and Rockstar is also scheduled to start marketing GTA 6 in the summer, according to Take-Two Interactive CEO, Strauss Zelnick.

Rockstar has an incredible portfolio that includes Grand Theft Auto, Bully, and Manhunt, but Red Dead Redemption 2 is arguably the studio’s magnum opus. Former Rockstar writer and co-founder Dan Houser has said protagonist Arthur Morgan is the best lead character Rockstar has ever created, and Red Dead Redemption 2 officially became the fourth best-selling video game of all time in November 2025, with more than 79 million copies sold.

While little is known about the upgrade beyond its alleged existence, it will likely feature improved visuals and support for at least 60fps, as well as be a free upgrade for existing owners of the PS4 and Xbox One versions.

Red Dead Redemption 2 remains one of the greatest video games ever made, and a current-gen upgrade would be the perfect excuse to revisit its vast open world and experience the downfall of the Van Der Linde gang once more.
