The Resident Evil Requiem (RE9) live-action trailer dives deep into the series’ lore, and rather than showing Leon and Grace doing their thing as earlier trailers did, it goes back in time to the Raccoon City outbreak. The trailer shows the horror of the Raccoon City incident, as a mother and daughter are tragically caught up in it.

Raccoon City itself has always been an important part of Resident Evil lore, even long after its destruction. It was the outbreak that anchored the original trilogy and continued to be a plot device even in Resident Evil 6 and beyond.

However, as the series has moved on, the location itself, or at least the smouldering ruin of it, has had very little screen time.

With Resident Evil Requiem confirming we’ll be returning to Raccoon City, fans are wondering what the location could be like now, and with all sorts of theories as to what could still be lurking there. Is it still full of infected, but monitored? Has it been a breeding ground for monsters for over 25 years?

Something has survived

The Resident Evil Requiem live-action trailer confirmed that some zombies did survive the blast and were mopped up by a clean-up crew. The protagonist of the trailer is seen as a zombie at her daughter’s grave, moments before she’s shot in the head – and this is after the bombing of the city.

Those who shoot her then say “Raccoon City is ours”, implying that the city fell into nefarious hands after Resident Evil 3, and this has likely remained the case up to the present day, leading into the events of RE9. This was also teased at the end of Resident Evil Outbreak, but Capcom never continued the plot thread until now.

Naturally, this is a deliberate tease for the game, but it confirms a long-held fan theory of another sinister power taking possession of the ruined city, and the horrors that likely still lurk within. Of course, it also confirms that bioweapons survived the blast, and if zombies did too, just what else is waiting for us in the dark?
