Ahead of its February 27 release date, Capcom dropped a new, bold live-action trailer for Resident Evil Requiem (RE9). The trailer titled “Evil Has Always Had A Name“ features horror icon Maika Monroe (It Follows and Longlegs), as we follow her tragic (albeit brief) story amid the Raccoon City outbreak.

As we are returning to this iconic location featured primarily in Resident Evil 2 and 3 for RE9, this trailer serves as a grim reminder to many of the nature of the outbreak and its aftermath. While Leon, Ada, Claire, and Jill may have escaped unscathed, the same cannot be said for many others.

We highly recommend watching the trailer for yourself, as its three-minute runtime masterfully shows off the potential and promise of Resident Evil in a live-action format.

A horrifying homecoming

As fans are saying, this trailer is fantastic proof of just how well Resident Evil could work in live action. While the games do a fantastic job of creating unique horror experiences, it can be easy to forget the horror of this zombie outbreak as a member of the Stars task force or the RCPD.

As one commenter so elegantly put it, “Crazy how a 3-minute short film is better than every Resident Evil movie that’s ever been released”.

The trailer’s success owes much to a high production value and strict attention to detail.

For instance, fans note that at one minute and 33 seconds into the trailer, you can hear hulking horror Nemesis growl out for the members of Stars, a chilling, familiar sound for those who have faced him while playing Resident Evil 3 (RE3).

The live-action trailer is also a great reminder of the desperate state of Racoon City following RE2 and 3, with the overhead shots really putting into perspective the sheer destruction inherent to ‘cleaning up’ an outbreak.

While we have to wait a while longer to return to this familiar locale, it is safe to say that the Resident Evil Requiem live-action trailer has us hungry to see more of the game at the end of the month.
