Developer Playground Games has announced a release window for fantasy RPG Fable: Autumn 2026. The studio made the announcement during an Xbox Developer Direct and coincided with a closer look at the reboot’s gameplay, with the title revealed to be an Xbox Game Pass day-one release available on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and, pleasingly, PS5.

Reports initially had Playground Games’ Fable slated for a 2025 release; however, Xbox announced in February 2025 that it was delaying Fable’s release until 2026 to give the developers “more time”. Anticipating backlash from fans, Xbox Game Studios’ Craig Duncan was quick to add that the reboot is “definitely worth the wait”.

Albion stuns in new gameplay

So far, gameplay footage for Fable has been elusive. Now, however, we can see how this reboot has modernized the Fable franchise, while also taking a better look at our new hero. That said, in Playground Games’ own words, the goal is to remain “faithful” to the original Fable trilogy.

Partnered with this announcement is a closer look at a reimagined Albion. Although previous Fable trailers have depicted the quirky and unashamedly British gamescape we remember from the original trilogy, an action RPG is a far cry from Forza Horizon (the franchise for which Playground Games is better known).

In true Fable fashion, you’ll begin as a child. But as always, things begin to go wrong in short order. As you become “the hero you want to be”, you’ll be able to fully customize your character more deeply than previously seen, but while still maintaining that Fable charm.

You’ll also traverse familiar regions by returning to Bowerstone, as well as exploring the famous Heroes Guild. But it isn’t all work and no play, as you’ll also be able to make new connections, romance interested parties, and generally create a quaint life for yourself.

Just remember that everything you do builds your reputation, with morality “not [as] black and white” as in previous Fable adventures. In short, “your choices change the world”.

I couldn’t be more excited.
