The much-loved Total War Warhammer series is back with its fourth outing, this time focusing on the Warhammer 40,000 (40k) universe with the aptly titled Total War Warhammer 40k. Given the iconic setting’s unremitting emphasis on endless war amid a crumbling universe, the Warhammer 40k galaxy is a perfect fit for the Total War series’ robust brand of strategic warfare.

Between Total War Warhammer 40k and Warhammer 40k Dawn of War 4, fans of Games Workshop’s setting have plenty to anticipate. No developer is better equipped to offer us epic, grand-scale battles than Creative Assembly. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming tactical RTS and turn-based grand strategy hybrid.

Total War Warhammer 40k release predictions

As it stands, developer Creative Assembly has yet to confirm an official release date for Total War Warhammer 40k. With that in mind, a 2026 release seems unlikely, so we’d wager 2027 as a good bet or 2028 at the latest.

Either way, Creative Assembly is known for being very generous with its pre-release marketing, sharing plenty of details with players along the way. We’ll surely hear something more concrete before too long in 2026.

Total War Warhammer 40k gameplay and story predictions

Creative Assembly describes Total War Warhammer 40k as “a brutal fusion of galactic strategy and grimdark warfare.” In practice, it sets out to marry turn-based strategy on an overworld map set among the stars with real-time battles on the ground, all set in the science-fantasy 40k universe.

As for the story, details are currently a bit sparse. However, we do know that it’s set in the 41st millennium, specifically in the Era Indomitus, with the galaxy embroiled in an endless war. We also know we can expect a broad-scale narrative that spans far more than a single planet or star system.

Total War Warhammer 40k factions

You’ll be able to play as various factions, including the Space Marines, Aeldari, Orks, and Astra Militarum, each one with its own campaign, weaponry, fighting styles, and unique gameplay features.

Thanks to a game developer round table, we know a little more about what to expect from each of the four factions. Astra Militarum, the closest thing Warhammer 40k has to a more conventional sci-fi army, will play like more traditional Total War factions. Think numbers, attrition, and conventional siege tactics.

By contrast, the Space Marines offer high-quality troops that are relatively scarce. Space Marine players will need to take advantage of rapid deployment and maneuverability to make the most out of these genetically enhanced super soldiers.

The Aeldari – a faction of haughty sci-fi space elves – are even more precious about their troops. An ancient, dying race, the Aeldari will have to go to serious length to preserve the lives of their soldiers, since they are extremely difficult to replace.

The Aeldari will also be concerned with stopping cosmic calamities and pursuing more high-concept objectives, unlike their short-lived human counterparts.

Lastly, we have the Orks. Think hulking, green Mad Max-style bruisers, and you’ll get the picture. They’re also technically fungus – it’s a whole thing.

Orks are all about aggression and overwhelming numbers. If your offense slows, you’ll need to deal with infighting and instability.

We will almost certainly see more factions added post-launch, too. In an official post on the Creative Assembly forums, the developer made it clear that it wants “all your favorites from the setting [to] eventually coexist with a vast galactic sandbox.”

Total War Warhammer 40k trailers

Only one Total War Warhammer 40k has been released so far. The Game Awards 2025 revealed the teaser as part of its usual cavalcade of glitzy previews and celebrity cameos.

In keeping with its function as an announcement trailer, it melds CGI sequences with a few short clips of gameplay from a pre-alpha build.

It’s dark, grim stuff as you’d expect from the 40K universe and showcases large-scale battles featuring hundreds of units from various factions duking it out on a range of different battlefields.

We also got a glimpse of the scope for army customization, as well as a couple of tantalizing shots at the Total War Warhammer 40k’s strategy layer.

Total War Warhammer 40k platforms

As confirmed in the announcement trailer at The Game Awards 2025, Total War Warhammer 40k is set to launch on PC via Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. The developers have yet to confirm whether or not we will see a simultaneous release on all three.

This will be the first time the Total Warhammer series launches on any platforms other than PC, Linux, and Mac, so we’ll have to wait to hear more to see how Creative Assembly plans to roll out the different versions.
